Title: It's started (now its done) Post by: krolik on April 23, 2011, 06:19:25 PM Well I finally got off my butt and ordered the Ryca (http://www.rycamotors.com/) kit for the Suzuki Savage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suzuki_Boulevard_S40) that I bought. I'm in the production order and paid my first half of the payment.

Low seat, forward controls, front brake is grab a handful and pray. Rear drum brake actually works better. I'm definately going to get a steel braided brake line for the front. The seat started to hurt my lower back after about 20 minutes. I can see why newbies get scared on a bike like this.
We will have to see how thing handles after it's all done. I've got Lisa working on the decals for the tank, and I've found the paint color I want, now I just have to bring it all together. It seemed the easiest way to clean up the frame and swing arm. There's quite a bit of road gunk, and what looks like dried clay or a thin wash of cement on the lower frame and swing arm. It also made it alot easier to make the needed cuts on the swing arm and frame and to clean those up. I'm probably going to get the frame painted a different color than black.

If you pulled a screw out of the frame during disassembly, it'd be a good idea to run it back into that hole before there's, like, an engine in the way. I'm waiting for some parts to get powder coated and a new set of tank mount grommets from the Suzuki dealer. I need both of the rubber tanks mounts grommets (only had one on the bike) so I can position the tank and line up the seat pan and side covers. Then I can drill the seat pan and line it up on the frame. I want to do that before I send the rest of the parts to the painter, because that is a two week wait for the parts to get painted. On a good note, Lisa finished the graphic design for the decals, and I have a place lined up to make them for me. Oh, I also saw the CBR 250 in the flesh for the first time today. It's a nice little bike and fit me just fine, a little forward lean when you sit on it. The springs are way too soft for anyone over 120# but overall it's really well done. Then again, it is a Honda. I put on the fender, headlight, turn signals, exhaust, glued the side panels and glued taillight to the seat pan. I also did the wiring mods and changed the jetting on the carb. Its about 95% done, now for that last fiddly 5%. :P A couple of the things left to do: compression release lever, and sort out some kickstand issues. Now for the pics: Look, its a carb! [thumbsup] The headlight, tail light and brake lights work :), but the turn signals don't :P. The starter cranks, but I haven't hooked up the fuel tank to the carb yet. I want to make sure the fuel petcock doesn't leak before it hook it up. Unfortunately the fuel tank leaks at the fuel petcock. :P I'll go ask the experts at http://www.suzukisavage.com (http://www.suzukisavage.com). I just found out that the vacuum operated petcock on the S40 is a piece of crap and should be replaced by one from a Yamaha Raptor. :-\ I got one on order from eBay. Battery, coils, plugs, and then an on/off switch. This allows me to bump start it, but means I need to leave it on a battery tender all the time. After putting it all back together, it was in pieces when I bought it, it started with three steps and a down shift. The only downfall was it jerked forward and the rear sets tore a hole in my bare calves... Was in shorts. Time to install the clutch cable... Oops.

Krolik, where things at??? [popcorn] I thought of you a few weekends ago. I started heading for Cougar but then decided to cross the river and went to Timberline lodge. Nice little ride. The north approach is a really nice ride up. The other way down was kinda boring, I'll go up and back on the more scenic north side next time. On the last little 7 miles or so to the top my little Enfield single would only do 50mph wide open. There's just no air up there. Kinda funny, the bike is mapped to go all the way to 18,000 feet since the get ridden in the mountains in India so much. I believe it's the highest map for a production bike in the world, but I don't know if it would be much faster than walking at those altitudes :D Looking forward to the completion of your new toy. Just a quick ride around, first impressions: The seat is like sitting on a 2x4, but the bike is very narrow. The brakes require a handfull to get any acton, the rear works better. It handles nicely, fun to ride. I have a few minor fit & finish items to get done, but its 98% done.
