Title: Shutting off while riding Monster 1100 evo
Post by: blass4u on August 23, 2011, 07:00:54 AM
I've owned my 2011 Monster 1100evo for a couple of months and since the first day its been shutting off while riding. The techs at the dealer are stumped, they can't duplicate the problem and there are no failure codes. It usually happends while I'm slowing down or down shifting. The bike currently has 800 miles on it. Has anyone experienced similar problems with Monsters??

This bike pops on decel, isn't smooth at all when cold, has stalled on me a few times (not starting out stalling, I'm talking about I pull the clutch in at speed and it stalls), plus the clutch takes a bit of getting used to simply because the motor is so lumpy below 4,000rpms, as does the relatively narrow powerband and tall gearing compared to the bike I came from.  It is smoothing out as I've put a bit over 1,000 miles on it already and should only get better as she continues to break in.  Plus, I'm getting used to the bike and haven't had a stall in the last couple hundred miles, touch wood.

Maybe it's like the experience of another new 1100 EVO owner, above. In his case it seemed to improve with more break-in miles.

Maybe something similar to this?

Call your store and ask them if they've checked the bike specifically for the issue in the most recent service bulletin. I can find out which SB it is if they can't figure it out. It may not be the problem but random stalling sounds pretty much like you're grounding out. Especially if there are no codes.

I met the service manager last night after work and rode for about 100 miles. Just like I thought it would happend, it didn't shut off. He mentioned that the 1100evo takes a bit longer to break in, about 1000 miles. I now have 910mi. He did call Ducati and was informed of the service bulletin. The last time it shut off was on Aug 13th, I'm hoping it was a break in issue and not a something bigger. Thanks for looking into this for me, I will continue to update any other issues.

I've experienced the same thing with my 1100 EVO.  You pull the clutch in to shift and the bike stalls.  It happened a few times within the first 600-700 miles but I just figured it was breaking in and that I would keep an eye on it.  I have 1700 miles on it now and it hasn't stalled in probably the last 300-400 miles.  It has happened twice on the freeway and a few times around town.  I just pull the clutch in and hit the start button and it roars back to life.

I thought it might be gas brand related but that theory seems to not be the case after all.  It has happened maybe 5 or 6 times but like I said, it has been a few hundred miles since it last stalled so I'm hoping it is just break in related.

I had just went through a similar problem though mine was a carbie 98...It had a bad spark plug cap.

I have a bit less than 2K miles on my new EVO.  I have experienced this issue about 5 times, the last one wast not long ago (at about 1600 miles) when exiting the freeway.  I just wonder when it will be officially broken in?

My dealer (PI California) mentioned that this is a common issue due to very restrictive exhaust controls and that there is not much to do about it.
Even when the issue is not too critical...I was expecting better performance from this Monster.  [thumbsdown]

Having the same issue. Bike's out of service; living at the dealer right now. I'm just glad my dealer replicated the issues and acknowledged them.

I'm happy to say that I now have 2,200 miles and the problem has completely gone away. Service manager thinks was break in related. Just glad it went away, was starting to get a bad feeling about it.

Happened to me twice the first week. No more after that.

I stalled mine yesterday, first time in a while but it was totally me.  [laugh]

In my case, it happened when shifting down, while reducing the speed.
Pulled the clutch, and as soon I dropped a gear, with the pulled clutch, the bike shut off.
Never happened since then.
