Title: Ever win the lottery?
Post by: lazylightnin717 on December 23, 2011, 05:49:30 PM
If so..

Tell me about it.

I'm already salty.

Because my parents get me a few tickets every Christmas.

And I have never won.

Anything...

Bah humbug

it isn't as exciting as you would imagine

I worked with this house painter who loved scratch off tickets.  On pay day he would literally spend $100 on scratchers.

I was with him once during this bizarre scratching ritual, and he won $20 on a ticket.  He started going crazy...

"Can you believe it, I won $20!!!"

"Dude, you lost $80..."

"No man, look: its a $20 winner!"

 [bang]

I'll play the multistate like Powerball and Megamillions lotteries once they get around $175M, because if I remember my statistics classes from school at all that's about the point when the chances of winning versus payoff:investment ratio start aligning.  In all the times that I've played (figure four to six times per year going back 5 years), I've won $7.  I spent a couple minutes being excited, stuffed the ticket in my pocket to cash out later, and then promptly lost the ticket.

Sucks to see the horror stories of lottery winners.  I remember one had his kids kill a parent for the money.  People going broke within 2 yrs of winning.  You win, stay working, put a good size chunk into different savings accounts, invest some, pay off debt, by a house that's not gonna be more in taxes then a quarter your yearly salary..

My wife's best friend from childhood won -- not that they needed it -- her husband is a surgeon.  They won something like $60mil after taxes.

They promptly set up a trust, and the trust claimed the lottery win.  They bought a couple of houses in Miami and LA and some nice cars.  They still have most of it.  They both still work.

When Powerball (I think) got up to 250 million, a bunch of us at work went together and got tickets. We had around 500 tickets total.

We obviously didn't win

Like always...

I'm still salty by the way

I didn't but I definitely know what winners go thru a bit...

I tell a friend that I won a lottery ( ok, it is not money it's just some raffle thing).  Before I can clarify, she stops me in mid sentence and says "You have got to give $5000 ! "    Wow note to self , if I ever win, make it secret and no way show your face on camera and put it in a trust.

I was born healthy in the U.S. to parents who could pay to put me through college & grad school. If I didn't use up my lifetime allotment of good luck right there, I'm pretty damn close.

I've tossed in a buck or two when folks in my office have pooled money for tickets - I do it both because it's a social thing, and because it's worth a dollar to fantasize about what I'd do if the numbers came up. Pretty much the same reason I look at ads for bikes I can't afford.

On the other hand, my father has a doctorate in nuclear chemistry and is one of the tiny fraction of numerically smart people I have ever met who can actually conceptualize the idea of a one-in-seventy-five-million chance of winning, and he buys a couple of tickets a month, so what do I know?

That's cool I wish I could do that. I have a very, very IZ_ concept of what 75 million is.

actually very simple
1st picture one thing
now picture that same thing 74 million 999 thousand 999 times more
wasn't that easy?  [cheeky]

What!? I kind of like how it was changed to IZ. Change it back!

My friend's father in-law won 2million on nickle slots. He also won 10k on a different trip. Not the lottery, but still pretty cool.

Sometimes you win, sometimes you don't.

Never win if you don't risk anything.

My pop always said a lottery is a tax on people who are bad at math.

He played the craps tables when they opened up in Tunica.

I remember he'd come home with a wad of 100s.  He rarely lost much.

I once confronted him about it, he said the odds of winning the lottery were 1 in millions

best odds on the craps table are close to 1:1 and the worst odds are around 36:1.

I don't gamble anymore not for a very long time, But when I was 21 or 22  Me and a buddy went to Tahoe to go skiing. we drove from the coast in my 72 Camaro early enough in the morning to make it to the lifts when they opened. I think it was like 1 in the morning that we left. We skied non stop that day and then got a cheap motel I think, or crashed on somebodys floor I can't remember which. I bought a new set of skis, boots, and bindings, while I was there, It cost a few hundred bucks back then, less than $400 I think.

Anyway after the lift tickets and the beer and food and whatever else it came time to go home. I was down to may last 20 bucks and the Camaro needed gas. So even at $1.25 a gallon, 20 Bucks would get us to about Sacramento in a car that got about 12 MPG.  After that, it would have been a couple of days walk to get home. Of course My buddy had spent all of his money, he had 2 or 3 bucks tops. So I said this is what were going to do, were going to play the slots at Harra's. They have a big casino on the south shore right by where we were skiing at heavenly (http://www.skiheavenly.com/), so we didn't go into Reno or anything.

We started off on the nickel machines until I won $40 then I cashed in for dollars and played the Dollar machines and getting paid $40 $60 and $20 jackpots but not really getting ahead. I got down to my last $5 when I hit a $100 Jackpot and stopped right then and there. I went and got Lance and said were outa here. That was the last time I remember Gambling. We even had enough money for Burger king on the way home.

Went to church w/ a couple that won somewhere between 5-10 mil. Had a very nice house, always drove brand new Escalades/Denalis/Etc, which is cool... I'd probably do the same thing. They blew a lot of it on toys and stupid shit, basically trying to buy friends. What $$ they didn't blow was milked out of them by a local religious organization. His wife left him when the $$ ran out. He died penniless living in a pop-up camper in a shitty local campground a year or two ago. Sad sad sad...

I've bought a ticket now and again, when someone came 'round asking if I'd like to get in on the office ticket pool.

Buying in gives me slightly (read: not enough to matter, generally) better odds at winning than not.

If I won, I'd buy gold and silver, and then visit a very good stock broker to invest a bit more. Leave enough to buy a heap of stupid shit neither I, nor anyone else, really need.

And if you know anybody who recently won a jackpot, tell 'em I'll follow them around and repeat, as advice, what I wrote above, for a mere $20/hr. ;D

Post by: zooom on December 27, 2011, 04:16:27 AM
if I ever won....I'd buy a reasonable house ( ie:no McMansion ), though I think I'd rather have a nice 4 bedroom rancher on a decent plot of land ( so I can have my own flattrack on the property ) and a bigass barnstyle 2 story garage to be workshop, bike storage, and all that jazz....I'd own a few bikes, a reasonable car....make sure it is all paid off, and put a vast majority of the rest in reasonable investments for to try and pay the property taxes off with the dividends from the investments...and I'd still work, though I'd probably try and change jobs to where no one knows me and has no idea about my situation and step away from their judgements and just live....

so I put my 5 or so bucks down when there is a large jackpot in Powerball and/or Megamillions....I haven't won yet...but I can hope and that particular hope doesn't mean squat if you don't play...and I look at it as Starbucks cup of something or other I have given up to do so, even if I don't win anything....

I don't think someone would mention winning the lottery on a public site..  especially one that they have a lot if friends on as to not cause issues.  Money does bad things to people.

The gold idea is good.. ill have to remember that
