I originially had a green Kwaka and a green MTB, so I thought it was clever - at the time...  Now I have a grey Ducati and a grey pushy, so it doesn't quite work any more (Dos Gris?). My wife is South American so I have tried to learn a bit of spanish, but it's pretty bad.

Have been a member of a couple of Duke boards, including ducatimonster.org and multistrada.net.

Based in Melbourne, and unfortunately am in between bikes right now (RIP Black M620, RIP Black MTS1000DS)-- both very deeply missed.
Had a bit of bad luck with these bikes, but I gots engine oil flowing in the blood, so I don't think I'll stop riding just yet.
And it can't be anything else but a Ducati.
So, it's either a HMS, S2R1000 or 2nd hand S4R (Is it me or are S4R's going really cheap right now??).
Very strongly leaning towards the HMS.

My rego is DMON. If you see me on the road on my new ride, give us a toot.

I also had a multistrada replaced a 999 with it ,I also was considering a HMS, but gladly ended up on a S4RS. wt:

IMO the HMS will give you thrills like a sexy 1 night stand but leave you looking for the stability the Multi offers :-*

But from what I have experienced and heard the tank is too small you sit to far forward, on long trips wind is a major factor and it’s twitchy on sweepers   ???

You are probably thinking the same as I was at the time??? It looks a bit like a multi its got the 1100 donk its lighter should go better than the multi  wt:

The Muti is going to be a hard bike to replace with just 1 bike unless you buy another multi it is a special machine and unless you have owned one you will never know why ???
 
I think the S2R is a special machine also has the same motor as the 06 multi and handles great almost as good  as multi ???

Thats right if I was to challenge my self on my S4rs with a multi I would run rings around the my self on the multi ???

The s4r is an awesome machine and if your looking for a precision machine that will need to be ridden as one go for it  wt:

It can be a hand full some times, especially in traffic, power is not everything its how you use it that counts and with the price of fuel the s4r is a gas guzzler  :-[

I give my vote to the S2R great motor, handles like a train, great fuel economy good touring ability wt:

Thanks for the advice Dock, doesn't sound like you remember-- the passing of my MTS has meant that your custom header and the topbox you sold me has gone to the heap as well. Boy was the header a beautiful piece of kit. Topbox rackmount was quite sexy as far as standard equipment goes too.

I agree with you that the MTS was really stable. It gave me so much confidence riding it around. Also agree that the MTS is a severely underrated bike. Looks were initially a deal-breaker, but I now love the looks.

I do miss the MTS, and I wouldn't mind considering another one as a replacement, but I didn't really find it... practical enough for me. As in, city riding-wise it was top heavy and also clutch heavy. However, touring-wise it could not be beat, even fully loaded.

So, ideally I'd still love to have the MTS in the garage as a 2nd/3rd bike, used more for touring. But right now my focus is having a good bike for city riding and weekend fanging in the hills. Hence the HM.

But yeah like you say, problems that concern me about the HM is (in order):
1) I'm too used to large, secure MTS storage [can't find *anything* in the way of Hard storage for the HM so far. HELP anyone?]/Practicality
2) Tank capacity/Fuel range/Touring ability
3) Lane splitting with the mirrors [Don't really like the other DP alternative, so that's not the answer either]
4) Riding on something that makes you feel like you're riding on a penny farthing
5) Wind protection/Touring ability
6) Handlebar vibration/Mirrors coming loose due to vibration
7) Theft target

So yeah the Monsters would all in all suit the purpose much better. But I'm absolutely IN LOVE with the HM with 2:1 termi kit, so I'm willing to compromise on those above issues to get one.

s2r1000 is my #2 choice for my familiarity with the engine and that it's air-cooled. I don't know what additional maintenance is involved with the S4R's extra cooling.

Also would love to hear details about the s2r/s4r replacement *WITH BETTER LOOKS* than the 696. ugh. Single swingarms FTW. I did see the thread on the s2r1098-- interesting. Definitely a candidate for bike #2 in my garage.

Header went on without a hitch. I don't have many good shots of your header unfortunately, the shot above was the best I could come up with.

Multi went down on an unsealed road in Flinders Ranges flinging me and my gear off. Wasn't a pretty sight after coming back couple of days later to pick it up.

My choice of Motorcycle has been Ducati since 1976, of which I have purchased 3, during the years 1976, 1980 and 2004. I have never sold a Ducati   [thumbsup] and can't see that changing any time soon.
The Royal National Park (Nasho) is my backyard and the Southern Highlands is a favorite stomping ground.
Don't currently have a Monster in my Collection, but joining this Forum could be the first step Wink

I think since you saw the last pics of my bike I have had my footpeg brackets powdercoated and have polished the header pipe in addition to the new clipons and top triple.  I had to also fix a couple of little things that happened after a ute unloading mishap when my husband and I got home and were unloading from Auto Italia that was held in Canberra at the end of March  :-[ oops - it wasn't good seeing my Duc hanging off the side of the ute upside down, held on only by one tie down that was through the wheel of my other bike (luckily).  :o

BTW - love all the recent mods that you've done - your bike is looking fantastic.

No worries ellingly - I will keep an eye out for your S2R1k.  While I still try and get out on the weekends, I haven't ridden into work for a couple of months - I don't feel comfortable leaving the bike in the work carpark at the moment. Hopefully things will improve soon once some building works are completed near where the carpark is.

03 M400 carbie. Matte silver/dark. Only mod has been an oil temp gauge and a kickstand bypass (that isn't working like it's supposed to) I installed today. I've got a DP seat to put on as well. I haven't done any other mods because I am waiting for all the paperwork to clear. Anything serious will be done after I get back to the states. Looking into pod filters, FCRs, tail chop - the usuals. Plan on rattlecanning the pipes matte black along with random parts. Pipes will be cored once she's back in the US (don't want emissions things to come up on import).

I think I'm one of 2 DMFers with a 400. It's nowhere near as powerful as the S2R I used to have. It can still pull and is a blast to ride. It's only a 5 speed (S2R was a 6). I could use the 6th gear on the toll roads. For daily riding, she does fine. I use up to 3rd daily and top out at 60 - 80kph. Roads are generally much slower here (avg limit is 40kph). So, I don't need much more.

I'd guess so, if the carbs/inlet manifold/heads let it - I was reading just yesterday that it's a 600 motor with a de-stroked crank and smaller pistons - lighter pistons in a smaller stroke ought to let it spin a fair bit faster, if it can breathe at the higher speeds (my poor old 750 with it's long skinny inlet manifolds is running out of breath well before it's thrashing the bottom end to pieces...).

As I understand it that means if you were keen, a 6 speed cluster out of a 620 will drop right in (along with the slipper clutch if you find the right 620 parts)...

                  Yeah we do have at least one fine folk around here (OK whoever you are put your hand up right now) If I remember rightly, your 400 was based one a half fairing SS model of the eighties and nineties, single front disc, and yes they did rev a bit, but I cant remember where I heard it but a six speed box will not fit (having said that, dont read it as gospel) so we are having a ride to the pie shop soon, ya coming or what ( 8)).

Currently own a MV Agusta Brutale 910R and am really thinking of trading it for the 1100S when it comes out. Originaly wanted the Monster but I thought the MV looked better at the time (NO OFFENCE) and it does go like a shower of shit with the race exhaust and power commander.

But hell I love the look of the new 1100S and with a set of Termignoni carbon pipes and a power commander fitted and mapped......... well one could just imagine.

I also have a Harley Night Train 09 model that I pick up in January.

I really look forward to posting on this site and maybe catching up with a few of you one day.

You'll find lots of encouragement here for doing mods and adding bling.
Don't just go looking at Termi's though, Arrows and my Fav MIVV along with QuadD are making pipes/slip-ons for the new Monster.

I test rode the 910 a few months ago when they dropped the pricing ready for the new models. Truthfully, I didn't like it as much as I'd hoped. Thought it didn't have enough go! I really found the torque of my monster was the biggest difference. The Monster is also a lot more sporty ride geometry. I felt I was sitting on top of the thing. I did however love the look,  [thumbsup] maybe the R, pipes and commander make all the difference. Certainly my monster is far from standard.

just introducing myself, i'm new to this site and relatively new to riding (and duke's!).

I'm a massive car fan and it was only a few months ago that a friend got me into bikes so i decided to make the crossover and get my licence and buy a bike. i'm the proud owner of an '05 M620 (learner legal) which i'm loving. I would post up a pic but i'm a bit of a noob so maybe if someone can point out how to add attachments i'll put one up.

Don't worry Vossy, they are going to start coming up soon with the introduction of the 1100s. and at the moment s2r1000's new have free termi cans! so that has to help too! You'll get there eventually, it does take time though and they are great, highly addictive. Enjoy.

You would have seen a few Ducati's last October with the Turismo. Did that inspire you to sell the Gixxer and get a monster?

Interesting. Does anybody actually have new S2R1000s though? As free termis means free DP ECU .... sounds like a bargain.


I am interested to see how this pans out as many current monster owners don't fancy the look of the new monster (forgetting for a moment what it actually is as a bike and the expected ridiculousness of the price tag). It could be argued that the S2R1000 was the best of breed with all the attributes of a true Ducati Monster: dry clutch, SSS, full trellis frame, air cooled

So those that are willing to part with their beloved will be demanding top dollar, regardless of what else is available in the marketplace .... just a theory.

after reading reviews (both Magazines, online and Spidey's) it sounds like the new 1100 is better in almost every way over s2r....I say almost...I believe the bike just isn't going to fit big blokes well...and the lack of front fairing!

I think the styling will win people over eventually once they see them in the flesh and the mods start happening...

I've always liked the aircooled Ducs. Used to have a 600 pant many years ago untill it got stolen buy some low life.
There's one on ebay at the moment which sounds interesting.

If anyone hears of a 06 or 07 S2R1000 in preferably Red or black will surfice drop me a line.

Spider the best rides i've found so far are Licola Rd and Dargo Rd in the Snowy Mountains still loads of exploring to do. If anyone wants some info on rds in the Gippsland area be happy to tell you what I know.

the road that links Bena to Poowong and then Athlone through to Drouin is good....the first part from Bena for 3 kms is twisty and closed in and has black cockatoos on the side...good fun!

Wilsons Prom is also a great ride through Buffalo, Stony creek and then lunch at the Koonwarra store.

and from Moe to Walhalla is fantastic in the summer time too....then go back via Tyers/Tralalgon.

next summer I want to hit great alpine range through to Omeo...then Bairnsdale, sale etc.

It has the usual Termi, cnc, LED, and carbon goodies.
Only previous bike was a KTM Super Duke, and I still have a couple of performance cars. Thats not what I am here for though...
Not too proud to say I have no riding skills whatsoever, so I am looking forward to taking some riding courses so that I can keep myself safe and have some fun doing it.
I normally work pretty long hours, so the bike was a present to myself so that I could get away from it all and just focus on the joy of riding. Well, 2 days after I bought the bike I was made redundant, so I have had a chance to put 1200km on the bike in the last week. That is the silver lining to the cloud...!
There is a lot of good info on the forum. Thanks for the info to date. Who knows, I might even be able to offer some advice down the track...

I can highly recommend the Stay upright course.
It,s run at Mt. Cotton, got a lot out of it after being off bikes for a couple of years, really helped me to get my confidence back.

I'm a Ducati tech at Flywheels in Sydney, prior to that Gowanlochs.  I have just listed some items for sale which I have been accumulating for a Monster project, now no longer needed.  Instead I am directing my efforts into building up a Bears F3 race bike Paso motor into a 888 Corsa Chassis.

So if theres any interest in the bits listed, you know where to find me.

G'Day Dave, welcome to the board, a great bunch of people! very helpful and beautiful bikes (the post your ride thread is magnificent!)

I have some old grey DS (dual spark) belt covers....I'd suggest you 'search' the forum and see if you can paint them....the grey ones are UGLY in my opinion (they came in black as well) and don't bother spending big bucks on the carbon ones - hard to keep clean, get dusty and can't really appreciate the carbon weave in them anyway (if you're a carbonista, as some on this forum are).

I've been away so long it counts as a new member I think! :)

So, yeah, way back at the start of the year I broke up with my fiancee. Moved out, got stuck in a share house for a few months, been absolutely flat out at work, etc etc. Saddest thing is I had to leave behind two awesome dogs, one of which I spent most of the time training :(. Now in my own place, with reliable and consistent internet and 5 minutes to scratch myself again. (I am off to Sydney and Townsville next week though).

I have had my S4RS for a week now. It is a massive step up from the old VTR250 (hehe).

I embarrass this bike! I thought I could ride, but it feels like I'm starting all over again.

Did an 6 hour loop up around the Putty Road on the weekend, my first 'real' ride. I am keeping the revs pretty moderate during its run in, but it is an awesome feeling up around 6k, it seems like the bike is just starting to sing!

a bit about myself, I am a professional smart arse. yes i am a member of the constabulary. not the ticketing type though.

i ride a red 93 M900. oldy but a goody. tail chop, no mirrors, after market indicators, cored exhaust, blah blah blah. cant afford real modifications. I had to sell couple of mountain bikes to pay for the duke. will be selling first born to pay for further mods.

Self confessed Ducati nut here.

Taken both wives to Borgo Panagale on their respective honeymoons.  (Settle down it's all legal, one is now an ex) :)

Been playing with dirt bikes for the past few years since selling the ST2 but saw the light and picked up my 01 M900Sie earlier this year.  She has Ti Termis, normal S CF bits plus a hugger, bar ends, and a DP clutch cover and pretty pressure plate.  Oh and the wife thinks Monsters are a hot bike which is win win all round.

Anyway just thought I'd say ello.

I live in Cairns Australia and own a Monster S4RS (white).

I have owned many Ducatis, but this is my first Monster, and first "rubber band" duke. It is awsome!

I also ride a KTM 525 dirt bike and I race Supermoto on a KTM SMR 560. Riding a Supermoto is something every rider should try at least once, there is nothing like it.

Just tried to up load an image with no luck, so what is the trick?

They have to be hosted somewhere else, i.e. flickr, photobucket
then you copy the image location from wherever it is hosted use these little image tags (http://)
found just above the posting window in the line of buttons.
Paste the image location in the middle of the image tags and hey presto image posted.

It's probably best if you just give me the bike, easier for everyone, then I can take pictures and post for you....everyone's happy!  ;D

What do you ride i.e bike, colour etc? I thought it would take me forvever to find that info in the introductions. I am on the Old Road a fair bit as it is so close to home (and lots of fun too!!!!). I will keep an eye out for you. Mine is a red 695 and you will probably hear me coming with my new high mount Termignonis (noisy buggers!).

Betty is an almost stock black S2R with baffled pipes.

Jukie on the other hand is a real chick's bike ... yellow 620 with gold blingy bits ... and there is no probablies about hearing her coming (and that can be taken which ever way you like).

If you are going for a ride post it up ... no guarantees, but there is usually somebody up for a ride.

Just to let you know there is a new Ducati workshop/service centre opened up close to you in Ryde/Meadowbank area - 10 mins walk from Meadowbank station.  Desmo Clinic

Desmo Clinic is a new workshop that opened last week in Nancarrow Ave, Meadowbank.  It is owned and run by a husband and wife team, husband on the tools and the wife doing the admin.  Award winning Ducati Technician offering very personal service to the customer at a tarrif below what the bigger workshops charge (no corperate overheads equals a lower cost structure, passed onto the customer)
Italspares import directly from Italy and have a cooperation agreement to supply Desmo Clinic with spares to support the servicing of bevel and belt drive Ducatis.

Located 10 mins walk from the station it makes a very cost effective alternative for Ducati servicing.

Here I am again, whingeing in the Oz section... Called Ducati Bris today, seems there was a mixup in sending my parts from Syd, and now no-one  knows where the parts are or when they'll arrive... hooo-bloody-ray. Its my birthday tomorry and Ill be stuck driving the cage. Not happy. Just for everyone's benefit here are the terribly complex and and hard to understand parts I need.

Part 1: (Ducati catalogue number) 748.1.023.1A  (this is a nut that goes on the rear axle)

Part 17: (Ducati catalogue number again)  374.1.002.1B (this is plate/tension washer that goes between aforementioned nut and swing-arm)

So good to rely on others isn't it??? Anyways, have a good weekend all, and have a beer(or bourbon(s) in my case) On my behalf. I'm off to see if I can find a quicker/easier place to get my bits before I have some birthday-style partying.

Close. Staino at the moment. Will go Ti once it's fully healed. Couldn't find any properly sealed sterilised Ti bars in time.

Ideally I'd go platinum or palladium, since I work with (mainly) Archean rocks which are generally where we found our platinum-group elements.

Then again, we also find lots of nickel in the Archean here in Aus -- Kambalda and the like -- so I guess there's some symbolism there with the medical staino (which has a bit of Ni in it).

Has had a few mixed reactions at my work though - ahh, the staid public service mentality :D. On balance, people rate it; it's perhaps more accepted than when I had blue hair last year!

Well Ti is an Aussie metal too.  Digging it up (in the form of Rutile) pays for my Monster mods  [laugh] Wouldn't platinum or palladium be too soft?  We use platinum/gold crucibles at work and they etch very easily - lots of hiding places for bacteria. I'd stick to Ti if I were you. But then I'm not and I don't think I'd get my eyebrow pierced looks like ouch.  [thumbsup]

And where are the photos of the blue hair?

Apparently you can get medical grade platinum barbells, but they ain't cheap. Oh well, I have several months to consider my options :D.

That's it straight after being done. Looks black unless you shine a bit of light on it, then it is electric blue.

Thats it requiring a reapplication (about 12 weeks). BTW that's the old bike, before I even moved up to Canberra.

Doing it blue requires a bit of work - at least two hardcore bleaching efforts and possibly a toner, too. Then another hour with the blue in, under heat, so it sets. Works though - very little comes off on the pillow :D.

Yeah, make the beast with two backs knows how he does it :). I've only done blue... 5 times in my life? Platinum blonde twice, and green once. Averages about 4-5 hours to do it, plus 1 hour to redo it halfway through the life. I can get about 16 weeks out of one proper doing, so a redo of 1 hour after 8 weeks.

Not tooooooo bad. My ex fiancée used to take between 30 and 45 minutes to do (just) her hair every morning.

Don't particularly want to continue the off topic discussion ... but if that's what I have to do to wake up with less hair on the pillow ... I'll pass.

As far as I know the 800 was released in '05 and the 1000 wasn't available until '06.
