Title: The Flying Thread
Post by: duc_fan on September 30, 2013, 10:03:00 AM
Anything and everything related to flight!  Airplanes, fling-wings, gyros, powered parachutes, gliders, balloons...

Not sure about skydiving though.  That whole "jumping out of a perfectly good airplane" thing...  [cheeky]

To kick off, I've been working on my Sport Pilot certificate.  In a 1946 Piper J-3 Cub.  I'll try to get some pics posted from home (photobucket is blocked at work, and fiddling with it on my phone is kind of a joke).

This past weekend had to leave the Cub behind, because I needed to practice VFR cross-country flying.  Flew from The Dalles down to Redmond, OR.  Passed a DC-7 going the other way outta RDM.  Very cool.  Man, the Cessna trike is SOOOOO much easier to taxi and land.  It's like cheating.  In the Cub, your feet have to be hyper-active on the rudder pedals, and you gotta plan farther ahead, because the brakes... well, what brakes? [laugh]

On the return flight, we got up to altitude and were able to tune in the DLS AWOS... and it wasn't VFR anymore.  3000 ft solid OVC, and with the terrain around there, it's not possible to come in from the south and stay under 3000 MSL.  So my instructor filed an IFR flight plan and up into the clouds we went.  My first foray into IMC!  It was surreal.  Looking out the windows, up, down, all around... completely monochromatic grey.  I can see how spatial disorientation can become such a problem.  If you can't tune out your body's internal sensors and completely trust that artificial horizon, you are seriously screwed.  Even if I don't pursue a PP with IFR rating, I want to get some hood time or actual IMC time with an instructor again.  Not that I ever plan on doing VFR into IMC.  AOPA's ASI and the FAA are doing a good job scaring me out of that.

Anyway... about 10-15 miles out of DLS we were able to see the city lights and the airport through a break in the overcast.  Not sure why the AWOS was reporting solid OVC... it wasn't solid at all below 070.  Since we had the airport lights in sight, instructor called up Seattle Center and cancelled the IFR plan, and let me fly the rest of it VFR.

One important thing I learned: "legal" VFR minimums are not necessarily prudent to fly in.  Honestly, with those cloud formations, in the Cub, without artificial reference instruments, we'd have scrubbed the flight.  It was actually well above the legal minimums for VFR and even Sport Pilot ops, but I would not have been comfortable flying that without proper IFR instruments and an instrument-rated instructor with me.

So anyway... feel free to share aviation-related pics and stories!  A cool airplane you saw, a flight you'll never forget, trip(s) to Oshkosh, scary situations you'll never repeat, et cetera.

Oshkosh is 25 minutes away.  Always interesting things flying around here.  Mustangs and B-24's are pretty common.  Even if you are not an aviation nut, EAA is still a spectacle to behold.  I try to take it in every few years.  Probably have a spare bunk for any interested parties.

Will have to keep that in mind.  ;)  I went for the first time in 2011.  Want to go back... and now pursuing the Sport Pilot cert, I've added the goal of flying in to OSH to my bucket list.

I'm now 45 minutes away from Oshkosh. I think 1971 was the first time I went with my family. I'll have to add stories when I'm at a regular keyboard...

I gots only about 20 Hours behind the yoke of a C 152. 8 or 10 of those are solo hours. we had a flying club at my base and i would have continued if I wasn't just an E3 at the time.

Anyway I went into the aircrew program and accumulated 980 some hours in the C130 went lots of places and generally had a good time doing it. Now I hardly fly at all.

Private pilot SEL, ~ 110 hours, PIC time in C152, C172, C182, M20J also have time in C310 and a Decathlon (inverted fuel and oil systems, great fun)

Never ever ride in back of a C310 with 3 flying instructors. After a lesson, instructor says innocently asks if I'm doing anything for the next couple of hours. "No real plans" "Wanna ride along?"
Start with a short field take off, if you lock the brakes, wind-up the engines, and then dump the brakes the rate of acceration is most satisfying.  [evil]
You probably didn't know that older C310s with tip tanks are prone to a self re-enforcing oscillation due to lack of baffles in tanks and the fuel sloshing for and aft. I didn't, so they showed me.
Then they did some stalls including power on in 45* banked turn and another power on stall with one engine out.
The highlight was shooting an instrument approach at night with one engine S/D and feathered. The image of the prop blades slowly revolving while being back lit by the strobes as trees whiz by at the edge of the runway is permanently etched in my memories.

I keep watching Airplane Repo on the Discovery Channel and it makes me really want to get my pilots license.

I'd love to own a Cessna 125 Float Plane.

So, I prefer to fly much closer to the ground. I'll take my duc or car over wings just about any day. But, I am one of the many voices on the other side of the radio. My sky is over central AZ. If you've ever flown in the vicinity of PRC, FLG, INW, or PHX, I've probably kept an eye on you. Stay safe out there. It may be a big sky, but sometimes it's not big enough [leo]

Had my first experience with flight following (Seattle Center) last weekend.  Thanks for the work y'all do.  Keeping us crazy flight nuts in line and away from each other, away from terrain, and out of the weather is a tall order. [thumbsup]

I went to Embry-Riddle, which flies out of PRC.  I wasn't a pilot, though... aerospace engineering for me.  If you were doing this prior to 2005, you've probably talked to one or more friends of mine.

Found out from a friend in Alaska the show is at least partly fake.  They supposedly "repo'd" her friend's plane.  The day after the episode aired, said plane was... well, right where her friend usually keeps it parked.  They also claimed that it was "3 days away from civilization".  Well... it never takes them more than a few hours, and it's accessible by car.

That said... look up your local flight school and call them about taking a "discovery flight".  Usually less than $100, you get to go up for 30 min or so, see some sights, and do a little stick-and-rudder work.  If you're an aviator type, that little taste will have you hooked. [thumbsup]

I did that kind of deal, in a glider.

Very fun, and extremely tempting.

But my wallet would have bled to death with that big of a hole in it.

I am hot for a sailplane....  Flew hanggliders and paragliders to a total of 3700 hours before I gave it up for a more sane way to make a living.  Someday I will own a self launching sailplane  [thumbsup]

I have stories......

I am definitely familiar with Embry-Riddle as it is just down 95 in Daytona. Great school. They are now offering a Masters Degree in Drone Flying. They claim the classes are getting larger and the graduates are getting jobs. I am not sure about that. I figure that is a local Police Department owns a drone, they would train their existing staff to fly it. I can't see them bringing in someone from the outside as it would cost less to train an existing employee verse paying someone with a masters in drone flying. Also, lots of ex-military would have drone flying experience.

I am very hesitant to take a "discovery flight" as I think it will get me hooked and I will want more. I tend to get addicted to things very quickly and the wallet can't sustain a pilots license at this point. I have too many other expensive hobbies!

Blergh... studying for my FAA Knowledge Exam (Sport Pilot - Airplane).  How do you know when you're ready to jump in and take it?

I could probably pass it right now, no further study.  I'd wager my score would be better than 80% (70% is passing).  I regularly hit 90% or more on the electronic practice exams.  But... I am one of those anal-retentive knowledge types.  I want to pass it with 100%... in part, because it's less stuff to go over with the examiner during the practical test.  That, and I want to make a good impression with the examiner, and walking in with a barely-passing knowledge test is probably not a good way to start things off. :P

^^^You take the test as soon as you can answer all the questions.  I missed one question on my private and two on my commercial ticket.  Both times I put a star next to the question as I knew I did not know it and would rather admit it then guess and be wrong.  It took me about 15 minutes to take each test.  If I may ask what is your study method?

The written isn't bad.
I took my oral and practical from a designated examiner (retired 747 captain, got his ticket pre WW II, flew B-17s over Europe), I seriously thought I had failed, he told me to tie the plane down and walked into the office, after securing it I walked in, he was seating before the typewriter, "Here it comes", turns around and hands me my temporary license.

To this day I clearly remember the "engine out" part of the test.
He pulled the mixture and stated " The engine just quit", went thru the check list to no avail (big surprise), then was asked "Where are going to put it?". I picked a field and said "That one", the response was "You'll never make it" (it was really close, he figured I try to fly a normal pattern and come up short), do you know that with full flaps at 50ish knots in a full rudder to the floor cross aileron slip a 152 comes down like a rock (better than 1,500 fpm), he made me ride it down until we cleared the power lines at the edge of the field.

SB: My study method isn't one of the "official" programs.  I took ground school through the local FBO, have read all the applicable FARs (plus some extra), and am almost done reading the AIM.  Have not read the PHAK cover-to-cover, but followed along during ground school.  Have read the Practical Test Standards as well (though that's more applicable to the flight portion).  Also been doing quizzes on exams4pilots.com, reviewing subjects I don't know.  I also reviewed the most complete FAA Light Sport test bank I could find (http://www.faa.gov/training_testing/testing/test_questions/media/lsp.pdf (http://www.faa.gov/training_testing/testing/test_questions/media/lsp.pdf)).

I kinda figure the timing for me will be shorter than allowed, but probably longer than 15 minutes... maybe 30-45.  I think you have something like 2 hours to do the 40 questions... I might take a little longer just to double-check myself on the ones requiring plotting and doing time-speed-distance on the E6B.  The majority of them, though, take me seconds to answer.

sno: I'm trying to prepare myself for the "engine-out" part of the practical.  I've been warned the local examiner likes to do it right after you've flown over someplace convenient, like an ag sprayer strip... then after you've gotten yourself all lined up on some random farmer's field, he'll give you the engine back, and on climbout direct your attention to the field you could have conveniently landed at.

My instructor gave me a memorable lesson in keeping the pattern nice and tight when flying a low and slow airplane (my training is in a 1946 J-3 C-65 Cub).  I was on crosswind and turning downwind when he pulled power... I tried to make the crosswind runway, but we had to cheat and add a little power to make it.  Other options were not so appealing... it was all houses, residential roads, and an orchard.  I have kept my patterns much tighter ever since!

Duc, go buy a copy of the FAA's Test Prep book.  It is like 20 bucks or so.  Here is the study method.  Go through the entire book with two different color highlighters and mark the all the questions that apply to your future type certificate question in Red (or whatever makes you happy).  The back of the book has all the answers to the questions. So after marking all the questions, go through and mark all the correct answers to each question in yellow (or whatever color makes you happy).  Once all the answers and questions are marked go through and read the entire book a few times reading only the questions and the highlighted right answer.

Reading through the book a few times (mine lived on the toilet) and only reading the highlighted question and the correct highlighted answer (read nothing that is not highlighted!) will create an association between the question and the answer that will help you fly through the computer generated written test.

This will not help you with the FAA oral as they know all about the study method above and will craft the oral to see if you actually know the material or just the answers to the questions.

99% score on my private and 98% on my commercial using this method.......   [thumbsup]    GOOD LUCK!!!!   WHOO HOOO!!!

Another pilot checking in here (and skydiver too). I'm now working for the NTSB as an investigator based out of headquaters in Washington DC. Been doing that for the past year now, came from flight test engineering in the Navy (NAVAIR). Been a pilot for about 10 years, own a piper cherokee. Don't do anything stupid or you'll be giving me more work!! Stay safe everyone!!

Yeah, I read the reporting requirements in the CFR recently.  I'll be doing my darndest to stay clear of any activity described in that part. ;)

In other news: had a wonderful lesson yesterday.  We did "one-wheel taxi"... flying/driving down the runway on one wheel, using aileron to keep it rolled up on one side, and using rudder to keep it going straight(ish) down the asphalt.  Precision airmanship practice is a LOT of fun, at least in a J-3.

Also went out and did a couple stalls and steep turns.  Man, that airplane is so much fun to just *aviate*.

Speaking of J-3s... this is making me want to buy one and start stretching my air-legs:
http://www.vintageflying.com/index.htm (http://www.vintageflying.com/index.htm)

For something a bit more comfortable and capable, there is a used Sport Cub S2 up at CubCrafters... only $115,000.  (of course, the differences between buying an airplane and buying a motorcycle are that you can finance an airplane for 20 years like a house, and they don't depreciate NEARLY as much as bikes)

I find that the most experienced pilots seem to always come back to the simplest airplanes. I got my tailwheel done in an Aeronca Champ, basically Aeronca took the J-3 idea and fixed all the little annoyances about the aircraft. Burns 4 gph. Still has heel brakes though. I would love to own either.

I think if you max out a cub crafters cub the price can get close to $300k.

Flying Prosser Reservoir near Truckee.  Neat spot because up high the wind crosses the lake.  Down low it often switches 180 degrees and you can come back across the lake with the basket skimming the water, climb up and do it again a few times a morning.

I go window shopping on-again-off-again for a Champ.  One local friend of mine disses 'em, but I have no particular loyalty.  Like you said... they took a J-3 and fixed some of the annoyances.  I've heard it's a bit better for a tall guy like myself, as well.  Would like to try one on for size.

And yeah, the Carbon Cub and the Top Cub get expensive, quick.  The Top Cub *starts* at $220k.  And you and I both know that's gonna be a pretty basic VFR airplane.  Start adding GPS moving-map, fancy paint, XM weather, fancy prop, electronic ignition, interior trim, bushwheels...  skis will set you back $25k, and amphib floats are $60k!  Yeah, you could easily hit $300k for that airplane.

Along the same lines, I was just talking to an owner of an older Husky, and he was incredulous that a new Husky is a $300k+ airplane.  C'mon guys, it's a friggin rag-and-tube machine with two seats.  It's seriously worth as much as a middle-class suburban home?  No, it's not.

This is a big part of my motivation for staying in the Light Sport world.  If I buy an airplane, my max budget is gonna be around $100k... so we're looking light sport, or used piston single.  While I'd like the traveling capabilities of a faster and more complex airplane, I have a feeling 90% of my flying is gonna be sunny-Sunday putzing around the local airspace, just enjoying the scenery and the feeling of flight.  Like riding the motorcycle down a twisting road, it just feels good to go aviate, especially in a light-handling airplane like the J-3.

In other news: I officially have my student pilot certificate!  If the weather cooperates, it looks like I'll be soloing soon.  :D

Up until my sophomore year of HS, it was my dream to be an Air Force pilot...preferably fighters but bombers or attack aircraft would suffice. I excelled in math and science for this reason...My sophomore year of HS, I got my first pair of glasses and that was that. This was before laser surgery.

I have seriously considered going for a helo license. But time and money always seem to be in short supply...and Bicks will never give me a ride in his.  :'(

Should have listened to your Mama!

You just need to stop off at any recruiters office and fill out a few forms first (you know, liability waivers, etc.) 8)

wow, nice shots! its amazing that the BUFF will be in service for 100 years (probably more). Theres not alot that can do the job better.

Yeah, its sad that prices are so outrageous. Like you said, a cub shouldnt cost as much as a house. I really dont know what else to say....

I took this with a gopro clamped on to the right strut when i got checked out in the champ a couple years back. Its a good feeling knowing youre burning only like $30/hour in avgas.
In all the years of the cherokee being in the family, I have used it to usefully go somewhere maybe twice. Other than that its just all putting around.

Congrats on getting the student pilot cert, its not a long way from there!

^^ That is a cool pic. [thumbsup]

A GoPro is on my list... I have some excellent motorcycle roads that need shared, a quadcopter with a small camera mount to fly over the property here, and I'd also like to use the Cub to make some aerial videos of The Gorge.

Unfortunately for me, the DoubleEnder is not within the Light-Sport limits, so I'll "settle" for the Just Aircraft SuperSTOL:

Hi BobsPapa,  Nope not us, thanks for the wishful thinking and good thoughts!

Sadly it was someone I know.  In fact, the company that had the incident was the first company I ever flew for.

So for a little clarification:  This was not a crash.  The balloon had an uneventful landing and the pilot was in the process of breaking down the basket when he evacuated some fuel from the lines.  While the pilot lights were still on.  This caused a flash fire and did not burn up the basket or the envelope.  Unfortunately it did burn a couple of unsuspecting passengers and the pilot.  All in all a very bad day.

This being a public forum and me not being an NTSB investigator I can't really say too much.  l reserve any further comments (and boy do I have some) PM's.  Safe to say though, IMO this should have never happened.

Every day I fly I remind myself I am strapped to 45-60 gallons of propane and people lives are in my hands.  When proper procedures are followed it is surprisingly safe to fly.  Although like any other wind dependent sport it does not come without the occasional surprise.  Hot air ballooning is not tolerant of complacency as it only takes one major mistake to end a career.

Some folks look at certain forms of flying and think they must be less dangerous.  They all have dangers.  You're playing with physics in order to lift people and/or stuff up into the air... carelessness will bite you in the a$$, hard, regardless of the method of flight.

That said... with proper training, practice, adherence to safety procedures, and attentiveness to instruments/conditions/traffic/etc, flying can be performed quite safely.

Been doing the scary weird flying stuff for 25 years.  No accidents yet.  It takes a level of attentiveness that makes ripping a bike through a canyon look like a kids game.   First rule of flying: take all the chances you like.................  ALONE!   Never risk a paying passengers ass.  Common sense really

That ultralight is a death trap.  Having flown paragliders for over 3600 hours (mostly in thermals) I can safely say that aircraft is not safe.  Paragliders are not rigid wings and can do some evil things in turbulence.  Collapse, spin, re-inflate, surge at the ground.

In smooth air fun little toy.  in bad air?  Bye bye baby.

I don't go over to that part of the base.  From the outside, and from overhead it does look like a nice facility.

I did not know about that simulator.  I remember the Navy Reserve used to have a submarine simulator, and a bunch of other stuff at site near I-25 & I-70.

Yea one of the things they do is get everyone Damage Controll qualified (DC qual)  was there for 5 weekend drills and the did my 2 weeks (right after I finished Airframe school in Cheyenne) in San Diego on the Carrier.

Even though My job was as a jet mechanic i spent most of the time on board learning ships systems & fire/DC control.

Everybody from the Skipper on down has to be qualed. Its kind of like having a fire on the airplane, if you dont get it put out youre screwed.

Actually that one I have pictured is the Dixie Belle 164762 but The Nola Belle was identical to it.
This is it.
Looks like it went to Pax River and got some refueling pods added on or something.

Considering that one is 50, it makes me wonder what we may have flying above us out now days.  I guess I check with Area 51...

You think the Air Force should deploy on the big floating airport and fly those "Projection of power" missions instead?

Now all we need is a robot to browse the interwebs and make comments for us. Then we could all be free to walk in the park and play with dogs all day.

I'm pretty sure I was buzzed by a B-1 while driving across northern Wyoming years ago.  I was on 14 between Greybull and Cody in a white truck and this big ass plane came out of nowhere very low and slow.

I also remember watching B-52s take off from Wurtsmith AFB during Desert Storm while at my bud's cottage.

I used to see them almost every time I went to Bonneville, while driving through eastern Nevada.

Went to Reno in, I think, 2002. There´s no sound lik a Merlin / Griffon passing by, not even any Duc .....

Still, even with that speed .... it´s easy to understand why strafing heavily defended enemy airfields during WW2 was considered near-suicidal unless surprise factor worked.

I know a bloke (he purchased my VFR 800 in 2011) who is hand building a Spitfire.

It’s a very slow project but will be awesome when it’s done.

The Allison V12 alone cost him $50k or more many years ago. He got it from a bloke in California who specializes in them.

These guys I think.

The Bell V280 keeps the motors fixed, and swivels the rotors, while the Osprey swivels the whole enchilada.

Is this a noise signature issue, at least partly?
An Osprey flew into Van Nuys a little while ago, and it was making quite a racket.
Led me to wonder.

It's a giant ballache to make that big of a design change.

Anyone got teh 411?

Perhaps some protection against rotorblast FOD for the top of their head.
Though one may logically ask where said FO comes from that's not flight critical.

My Uncle John McKay, RCAF (RIP) and his WWII Spitfire.   He was decorated in WWII for shooting down a Luftwaffe jet along with a few of his mates, all flying Spitfires.

Visiting him years ago in his Canadian home, I took a book out of his bookcase, titled something like "History of the RCAF in WWII."  A folded piece of paper was between the pages.   It was one of his DFC citations;  his squadron engaged with the Luftwaffe and he ran out of ammunition.  Not letting his lack of firepower stop hhim, he got on the tail of a German fighter and managed to fly him into the ground.   Then he went back up, got on the tail of another German and flew him into the ground!  I would not have known this had I not chanced upon his citation, he never mentioned any of it.

He later flew an F86 with the UN Forces  in Korea.

Another Boeing 737 Max 8 burned into the ground killing all onboard (157).
All 8's and 9's are now grounded.

...and this from a buddy of mine that's ex Air Force...

Quote
This is from my son, who’s a Southwest captain. His opinion is that the grounding was not necessary. They know exactly what the problem is and it’s a runaway trim problem and the emergency proc. is exactly the same as it is for most of the aircraft we’ve flown. TURN THE make the beast with two backsING TRIM SWITCHES OFF!
He said that the Ethiopian F/O had about 300hrs and the capt. was very young. These guys are so reliant on automation that the end result MAY have been the result of that.

Let me guess, it's an electronic trim that normally does very small movement of the whole elevator 'inside the computer' ?
So if it goes wacky it's got big control authority?
It runs away with the whole elevator?

An acquaintance in college was in the infantry.

He said they'd be training out in the middle of nowhere.
A plane from their base would do a low fly-by, then the pilot would crank the stick back.
As the plane went up, he said they'd see the pilot turn around and look.
Always an "Ohhhhhh shiiiiiitttt" moment, even if the plane was a friendly.

Can't really blame the low-cost software folks for being inexperienced.

Blame is on those who decided to have a bunch of middle-school kids maintain their cars for free.
Get what you pay for, if you're lucky.

Not sure if I caught all the numbers right, but 130 kts at 100' off the deck and winds gusting to 60 kts....
Tailwind gust and that plane's going to stop flying.

I drive the 101 past the crash site about twice a week, and I know that area pretty well.

It's rugged enough that the pilot would have to search a bit to find a spot to land.
And the pilot's not going to want to admit defeat and land.
But still.

As soon as they open the road and the fans slack off, I'll go check it out.

And circled in blue....
They flew *right* past it.

Hey what's the reason for the Flugel Horns on the guns?

Not positive although I’ve seen that on cannons before. That pic is of a Corsair with quad 20mm cannons vs the six 50cal machine guns.

I was on a carrier once, and they painted up a couple old cars like demolition derby cars. They welded a bar under the front of the frame so it could connect to the catapult. Then they proceeded to launch them off the deck to show the power the catapult had by itself.

Perhaps the pilot watched Top Gun prior to the flight.

-6k FPM on approach and the plane wouldn't drop the gear because the pilot was flying too damn fast.

As you can see by his uniform, Jaun is back to work. He’s still gonna do videos though.

You may have seen this footage. Amazing job by the LAPD to save this man’s life. Here’s a little background information from a pilot who is based out of the same airport.

This is the air traffic as it happened. Also another angle of the train hitting the plane. (Guy filming almost caught some debris).

So, most wingsuit videos don’t show the raw speed because the cameraman is also flying. Here’s a stationary camera shot of some flyers.
