So I just sold my Yamaha cos I've been wanting a monster 796 for the longest time.

I went to a dealer and he has the m796 20th anniversary edition with only about 400 miles or so for $8500. Its #1 of 200. I've always looked at the white with red frame, but the fact that this is #1 and the gold frame is unique is swaying me.

What are your thoughts?

Haha.. I'll go over and introduce myself as soon as I get one. I'm getting one for sure, I'm just not sure whether I'm paying too much for the anniversary or get an already modded one.

Buy a  used 1100 evo instead for the same price. Then you wont have to spend money removing those stupid chicken wing rearsets.

Who gives a crap about an anniversary model. The only difference is the removable skin.

I'd rather have more power, adjustable suspension, traction control and better looks (side pipes look cooler in my opinion)

The good thing about buying used is that the bike may come with extras. Exhausts can be very expensive. If the bike comes with a Ducati Perfirmance Termi kit you get pipes, ECU and intake mods worth thousands.

That is an excellent point but a dealership has a knack for hiking up the cost on such items.
I bought my 2012 evo with 7450 miles for $7000 US (bone stock). I do direct purchases from private sellers like on craigslist. Granted a valve adjustment was immediately required but at 4000 miles on a 796, that's almost the same. 3k miles before an valve adjust is nothing.

Advantage in that I do adjustments myself but even if you do not, a 796 for 8500 will be 9500 by the time you deal with all the markups and other stuff they have to charge to cover their overhead.

I mean't buying nearly new from a private vendor. I got $3000-$4000 in extras with a bike with 9000 miles. The full exhaust itself would have cost a fortune!
Some dealers need to move used bikes quickly for cash flow. Even more so if they are selling a trade in that is not their marque. You can target dealers of other marques who have Ducati trade ins.

I understand that some people need bikes that are unsullied. I bought my first Monster brand new, and it was the only new vehicle I have ever owned. So fresh.

All, thanks for the replies. It was a tough call and I always had the same notion. Buy on craigslist a monster that has all the mods done to it and its usually the same price as a bone stock model from a dealer.

On the flip side, I saw this.. something about it being 1 of 200 and being unique just made me lean that way. It only had 325 miles on it. Pretty much stock except for bar end mirrors. it was around $9000 otd. I probably could have gotten a 2013 with all the mods done for 8k or so.

Also, I did not want to go higher than the 1000cc. Didnt switch out the exhaust on my last bike. I think I may eventually switch the plastics out for the mach1 to make it a unique bike with the gold frame and the mach1 looks.

You'll have fun on it for sure. Put me in line for your old plastics if you ever change to the Mach one style

I have number 15/200  black with the gold frame.  Am told it's the only one in Canada.  Just bought it last week.  can't wait to get going.  Does the 200 tag mean world wide?

Congrats on the bike. I'm totally unqualified to answer this being Australian, but possibly 200 for N America? A local will know for sure. 200 worldwide would be pretty cool [thumbsup].

Certainly not world wide, it seems an American thing to have numbers for certain models but it's not common here.
The anniversary model was a nice nod to the original monster and I personally think that they were nicely put together and that 803cc motor is a peach.
If the bike suits you go for it you won't be disappointed but just make sure that it has the belts changed because even though it's not done many miles they'll be past their sell but date.

I have an M1100 EVO 20th Anniversary, love the bronze frame. 200 made worldwide, about 100 or less actually came into the US. So that makes 'em pretty uncommon.
