They were in my backyard, so I jumped in... with the notorious "Spank." That's me doing the terrible Synghman Rhee impression (so bad nobody could tell until I told them).

The team also campaigned the not-quite-running Austin America and a right-hand-drive MG Metro that I managed to spin.

In the presence of both our wives... who both thought it was a good idea. I'm shooting for the Buttonwillow race in October.

Patently ridiculous.

We did way better than Spank thought even with the other cars. The Metro basically ran the whole weekend, and we got the Austin running well enough to turn some laps on Sunday with multiple drivers.

It is surprisingly hard work to drive a slow car for 1.5-2 hours in the midst of a race.

I'm thinking based on historical precedent that I should probably change the clutch before the race.

On a separate note:
Apparently it's long-lost cousin had taken up residence under the hood, and ate as many of the wires as it could get it's teeth on. Then it hitched a ride in the trailer to my house, but exited the car before the car left the trailer.

A week later I was appalled by the stench when I opened the trailer door... blamed it on a propane bottle at first, then I saw the dead bunny.

Stock-ish at first.

Two pre-race must fixes:
The stock clutch has a rubber center. These have a tendency to come apart in the middle of a race, and the clutch inconveniently requires pulling the engine or pulling the entire transaxle at 20 or so hours of work. I'm thinking of using a VW solid racing disc.

When subjected to racing, the van motor also doesn't like to keep the oil down in the pan where the pickup can get to it. Luckily somebody sells a crank-scraper/windage tray for them.

This car is EPA exempt, so no cats to cut off...

So my build still hasn't really gotten off the ground, but I went out to Buttonwillow this past weekend for another go with Spank's team... 7 cars.

The Harley-powered Prius (painted black and white).
A Moke dressed as a white Ford Bronco.
A classic Mini (black and white).
The 1st gen Excel (black and white).
An Austin America (black and white).
A Yugo (black and white).
An MG Metro (black and white).

The theme was something to do with the 24 hour news cycle, and a certain slow-speed chase through LA.

The classic Mini was my favorite drive of the motley assortment (although the ToyoHog didn't run well enough for more than 8 laps or so... I didn't drive it or the America).

Yeah, it's on the book of faces, but I was too busy acting the fool to video my shenanigans.

Edit: The styrofoam roof came off the Moke at ~4000 RPM in 4th. No speedo, so I have no idea how fast I was going. It did provide me with a serious amount of entertainment as it lay on the track for the rest of the day. ;D

Heroic fix.

To clear the roof bar I had to put in the cage to clear the head of the tallest driver. I didn't find out he didn't fit until after the cage was in.

Holy shit. My English apparently got lost.

To clear the head of all drivers, I had to adjust the top of the cage. No drivers (except for our one arrive&drive) actually fit given poor design choices...

That is the stand-in.

I'll take some more pics tomorrow, it's coming out so we can make the flywheel and pilot bearing holder, finish weld the motor mounts, and hopefully put it back in.

Then it's radiator hose roulette, an air filter, exhaust, a little bit of fuel plumbing, new tires, cut a big hole in the hood and theme. Kind of in that order.

So, the backstory to this swap:

We raced the original engine for ~500 miles with no air filter... so obviously it needed to be replaced (when it still had a flywheel, I could spin it with my hand).

Some dude up in Phoenix was selling a couple of Volvo diesels as he cleared out his garage for a supposed move to Vermont. The Volvo diesels of late 70s/early 80s vintage were actually manufactured by VW... much like the engine from my mostly VW-badged Porsche. The internet informed me that VW only made two (2) bellhousing patterns, 4 cylinder and 5/6/8 cylinder. Porsche forums said the 924 was a unicorn that used the 5 cylinder bolt pattern on a 4 cylinder. Volvo peeps insisted the VW diesel in their cars was true to form as a 6 cylinder.

Since this is apparently the year of modularity (see my thread about modular Ford engines... spoiler, they aren't), I proceeded to bolt said engine to bits of car.

Either both engines are unicorns (i.e. a 6 cylinder with a 4 cylinder bellhousing pattern), the internet lied to me about one of the engines, or the belief that VW only has two bolt patterns is wrong... a belief re-iterated by a Euro tech I met through Lemons. Either way, the two patterns share (almost) 5 holes. Good enough.

Next problem: The engine came from an automatic, and had an 8 bolt crank. I wanted to use the Porsche disc and pressure plate... the Porsche flywheel only has 6 bolts. So we bought a big lathe. Some of the Porsche flywheel is now bolted to the flex plate... good enough, I hope (Hope is not a method!).

Now it's simple stuff like radiator hoses and wiring. The race is next weekend.

Next weekend (Veteran's day), I am joining a friend at the local truck stop to continue driving a 93 Le Baron to Houston to race it all weekend, and... shit. The best laid plans of mice and all. I don't know what the plan is. I have to be on the east coast for work on Monday.

I have further plans for domination at the next AZ race in Feb. Anyone looking for a racecar experience? We/me plan for 3 cars... I would be surprised if we were in anything but class C for any of them.

The Houston race went well-ish...

We got "Organizers Choice."

The Le Baron suffered from the usual 80s/90s Chrysler product maladies of nearly inexplicable problems that only manifested after an indeterminate time, responded not at all to attempted remedies, and generally persisted until no longer asked to perform above a generally low standard.

That means: It drove 24 hours straight to the race track with no problems (other than not having heat), but when it got there it inexplicably refused to run after an indeterminate time (approximating an hour) after which it would inexplicably "get better" regardless of what we had done if it could wait for about 15 minutes... and if it hadn't happened on the track at the end of an hour, it was guaranteed to happen right when the car went expectantly back out on track after a driver change. After the race it was fine, even in stop and go Houston traffic.

Things we triumphantly fixed to no avail:

Battery grounds were jankily screwed on to painted rusty surface.
ECU got cold air duct
Fuel tank inspected, clean as a whistle.
Cap and rotor inspected, knocked off the carbon.
Water temperature sender replaced.
Got the radio working (the fuse is only labeled with "dimmer" or something equally unrelated).
Swapped circuit breaker for fuel pump.
Fuel pressure existed (no gauge, but pinch the hose and you can feel it).
Replaced the front brake pads.
Bled the brakes.
Checked the overly complicated fuel pressure regulator
Checked the charcoal canister for clogging
Checked to see if the fuel tank was pressurising
Not necessarily in that order.

My current theory is the ignition coil, but the consensus said heat soak couldn't be causing that to intermittently fail... despite it being mounted to the hot, aluminum intake manifold.

It's currently for sale in Houston, but that's not my problem to deal with...

So buttonwillow was a bust, but the party was awesome. We took the diesel 924.

Racecar wise, we didn't set the timing, we had a giant fuel leak which required removing the tank (and transaxle). When we eventually started doing the timing, it was time to support the party we had signed in for.

Sunday we went out and it was relatively immediately obvious that our suspicions of head warp and head gasket were correct. The motor (with fresh rings) started to "feel tight" so I parked it and waited for AAA.

Once back, it was obviously at least the head gasket, of which I hadn't (for the first time) brought a spare.

Unfortunately, we painted the car green for a theme. Too close to BRG...

Msr Houston: was supposed to be a build for a friend. But events transpired such that we couldn't get our act together.

Instead, I brought the aforementioned misbehaving Porsche. Still green.

The only thing it didn't leak (for sure) is brake fluid.

I was out first, to verify that things were copacetic... And someone tagged me on exit from a sharp couple of turns. Meh, blame to be shared, but when I showed up to the penalty box, the focus immediately shifted to the sheer volume of diesel sprayed around the car and in the driver's compartment.

Relatively epic for a running car without fuel lines in the driver's compartment.

It turned out we had (at least) 3 fuel leaks:
Fuel filler cap
Injector leak off line
Injector interface with head

We also had a GIANT oil leak from, it turns out, the valve cover gasket.
