Title: Crossing double yellow line on Hwy 1
Post by: S21FOLGORE on June 07, 2017, 10:10:38 PM
Watch it in full frame.

Weekday, late afternoon. (I wouldn't ride on this part of Highway 1 in the weekend).

It is a little bit difficult to see them in the video, but, the first thing I noticed was two bicyclists.
As soon as I saw them, something in my head told me to slow down.
Sure enough, next moment I saw the high beam of a motorcycle directly coming toward me, on my lane ....

Somehow, this reminded me the first Mad Max movie ...

I remember back when I was invincible and indestructible... laughing in the face of danger.

Did he wave or point at you? Glad you're ok. Your gut told you to slow down because you just knew [thumbsup].
Bicycles in the middle of the lane travelling much slower than the traffic behind causing high closing speeds.. What could possibly go wrong?

Bicycles were as far to the right as possible, doing nothing wrong.
Legally, they are allowed to use the whole lane unless there is a dedicated bike lane, then they must use the bike lane.

The passing rider will last longer if he avoids passing going over a rise.

Well there's an "engineered in" hazard right there. What was the speed limit? We have the same issue here. Big closing speeds create situations of human error (or stupidity). No way I would cycle without a lane or path (or motor). I cycled everywhere in my home town, but there were no people. ;D
You're right about the biker's longevity. I can only guess at his gesture. I'm glad S2RF followed his instinct as he saw the scenario about to unfold.

Looking at the vid again the cyclists were way over so I was wrong (due to my biased predisposition).  Not the first time.
Car drivers are expected to give a metre gap passing cyclists down here. The car drivers sometimes panic and swing out into the opposing lane and can kill you riding the other way. I see that scenario and hug the outer line like a wary cyclist would. My bro in law has cycled at pro level and knows a few tricks.
I once had a very similar near miss with a knob on a TLR1000 .

That would be over-sharing in my book.  ;D

What part of Highway 1 is that? Looks familiar. Norcal between Santa Cruz and HMB?
