Title: Tesla Model 3
Post by: kopfjäger on July 27, 2017, 02:19:51 PM
Some background as usual, and a few pics of the new facility. (Largest footprint building on earth).

I'm planning on the next car being mostly electric.

I also need to get solar installed.

8 months with a Nissan Leaf as our daily driver: Love it and looking forward to more electric-car goodness.

Too rich for my blood.

Mostly because I could probably build one way uglier but cheaper.

The Volt is on my list of things to check out.

I average about 20 miles a day driving, tops.

You'd never finish it.

You'd never finish it.

That's one perspective.

Another one would be that I would build an SUV that truly produced zero emissions.  :D

 way uglier

I have boundless confidence in your abilities, but I don't think that's even possible.

It'd be easy.

I could just put a rolling stones group photo on the side and voila! More ugly!

I like it. I just don't want to wait 3 years to get one. I picked up an Audi A3 Etron in May. Does about 20 miles on battery then goes to the turbo charged 4 banger. Tripled my mileage, carpool lane solo access stickers, and 6K in rebates. So far so good. If the Q5 ish model ever comes out I will go that route. Supposedly 300 mile plus range.

The plug-in hybrids these days supposedly provide close to 100mpg.

Dream car.

Unrelated to Model 3 but related to Tesla ----   Does anybody follow the youtube channel - car guru  ?  the guy bought a salvage Tesla S that was submerged in salt water and another s that is damaged and rebuilt the salt damaged one.  I find his channel fascinating.

Don’t remember this being up, not so much about the car. Grandpa is the man.

We bought our house in April of last year. Then solar, then a Model 3. We love it. Long Range Dual Motor (non performance model) with about 10000 miles now. We ordered in early August, delivered late September.

We're on a similar plan-solar array ideally this year, then some sort of 'lectric vehicle.

It sounds likely that I will be giving my car to my eldest son. I usually start looking at cars early. The Model 3 might be on the short list as more chargers pop up. I could also consider renting a car for anything above the Model 3's range.

Chargers are everywhere. I have at least 3 between my house in SoCal and my family in Phoenix.

Been 2.5 years with a ‘15 Nissan Leaf SL for in town transit and it’s been great!  We did the car for a year first to see how it (and the Level II charger) affected our electrical bill.  Once we had a years worth of data, we sized out solar array to meet that need.

Side benefit with the solar is that our solar loan repayment $ is within a few $ of our average electric monthly bill...

I still drool over the Model 3, but it wouldn’t be a big improvement over our current situation and we would have a car payment again, so both of those nix the ‘3’ pretty much completely.

But, OH MY! that dashboard...  ;D  8)

I'm intrigued with an all-electric, but I'd have to try one for a spell somehow before I would be convinced that I could pull the trigger on ownership.

The problem for me and electric is Minnesota and its winters, plus the fact that I live in the sticks. So, considering a typical winter workday, an electric would need to function fully at -30* plus windchill, get through the first slog of a couple of miles or so that's usually unplowed after a snow, make it the rest of the trip running heat and defrost full blast (some in stop and go traffic), sit in a parking lot all day at the same subzero temps (probably zero chance of a charger there for the foreseeable future), and then make the reverse trip with no change in performance. Don't forget the occasional stop or two before heading home.

I'd totally participate in R&D if any manufacturer wanted to torture test one as a long-term winter commuter. I'm an enginerd, so I'd be able to provide data too.  8)

Interested....but skeptical.

Speedbag:  Research.  Lots of research.  If it’s not going to work for you, then it’s not.  Simple as that.  I do get concerned with our air cooled battery in 100’+F summer temps, but it’s been good so far.  I wouldn’t recommend air cooled battery system for everyone.  Liquid is better but more costly...

Also: first gen (‘10-‘16) Nissan Leaf is the only car I know of to have air cooled battery pack.  Everyone else does liquid cooling, especially Tesla.

Only ~50 miles per day, tops. Not far, but there's that cold factor, which batteries don't like.

A co-worker has a '05 Prius he bought new that's his daily (yeah. I feel sorry for him too), and he has a similar routine. After that amount of time with a hybrid, his gut feel is that all-electric would be dicey here in winter. Of course, summer sucks balls too sometimes with 100+ degree days and humidity like the tropics, but at least then there's no danger of freezing to death.

Interesting.

Down here unless the charger is fed by clean electricity generation, electric vehicles are effectively powered by coal.

You see a few hybrids around and the other day I saw two Teslas in a day.

Yes he is. Has a gracious manner about him.
I see old guys like that and realise that gentleman probably saved us from fascism and imperialism in the 40's. He's seen alot. Makes me think of an article years ago about a 100+ lady who saw the first planes and airships and Apollo11 in her lifetime. Model Ts would have been commonplace when this guy was a kid and he would have gone through the post war technological boom, 50's hot rods, 60's muscle cars, etc, etc and now electric vehicles. A good candidate to compare technology. [thumbsup]

I think the numbers I've seen is that sub zero temps yield about 40% capacity loss. So for a long range dual motor Model 3, you'd be looking at about 180 miles of range. Still not bad, but the heat can sap some miles too. Tesla forums recommend using seat heaters over the forced air as they are more efficient.
