Title: Monster 1200 vs Scrambler 1100?
Post by: showerfan on July 01, 2018, 03:16:31 AM
I found myself writing too much on LT’s Facebook page, so I thought I’d bring my internal debate here. I have never liked the look of the Monster 1200, until I saw this: (https://www.motorradonline.de/media/mrd-1017590/712/030-ducati-monster-1200-25-anniversario-sondermodell-2018jpg.jpg) make the beast with two backsing gorgeous.

But it’s mostly the paint, right? It’s so beautiful it makes me want to buy one. But I have this engine in my Multistrada (2017 pp) and far prefer that riding position. Also, I have this color scheme on my ‘08 S4RS and far prefer that design. So no go, my next Ducati will be a Scrambler 1100 Special — but will I get bored? I was initially concerned about the detuned state of the engine. To be honest, although I love the planet, all of these euro regs kind of offend me, and I can’t tell from just a test ride if the bike will be cool for me longer term. I’m hoping it’ll be just right for what I need: inner-city commuting around Berlin and an air-cooled soundtrack.

In my opinion — and I didn’t really love the smaller Scramblers — they’ve nailed the design: (http://1.1.1.5/bmi/www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/Gallery_A-L_16/Ducati%20Scrambler%201100%20Special_18_02.jpg)

What do you think?

That bike is looking nice +  [thumbsup]

It needs two dark grey exhaust shields, one or two side shields painted and a new vocabulary which you'll need each time you 'have to' polish the exhaust...

Engine is no problem.
86 bhp vs 90 on the first Monster 1100
88 Nm vs 98

Not enough? Kämna pulled another 12 bhp and 15 Nm out of an 800 Scrambler (along with the customers gold teeth and other belongings)  You can do/have done the same...   http://www.ducati-kaemna.com/tuning/best-practice/2-valve-tuning/ducati-scramber-800-tuning

Intake Express/Waspworks in Australia have made an intake kit for the Scrambler, so I'm guessing a kit for the 1100 will not be too hard for them.

One of the local DOC members had a Scrambler 1100 out for a ride and wasn't impressed. In their terms it was just bigger and heavier than the standard Scrambler and not a noticeable amount of power difference.

Personally, if I got a Scrambler it would be the 800 for my intended use, (busted back roads and dirt/gravel roads).

^Agreed. The 800 would've been great for those types of roads in Flagstaff.  Unfortunately, not many to explore close by here in OC.   :-\   The bike has been fun to mod and take on short rides up the PCH but a 50 mile ride to Santa Monica is not fun at all..even without lane splitting.

To the OP...after reading yours and DrJones' post, along with FHE on the 800, I'm thinking you might get bored.  Get the Monster.

Never liked the looks of the Scrambler and if I wanted a street bike that could handle some basic trails, I would get a much cheaper motard.

I reckon a 796 Hyper with dual sport tyres would work.

Too short for a Hyper :(

With a carved out seat I could get the balls of my feet on the ground on my 2010 Hyper 1100Evo. At 5'8" the late models are impossible for me.

I'm 5'4", but I know someone that is shorter than I that rode the Hyper. It helps that she's a badass.

At first, I thought you were referring to NAKID but then you mentioned Badass.

I don't know why you always forget that I'm taller than you...  [laugh]

Another vote for the Monster here. Anyone buying a Ducati appreciates “character” in their bikes and the Monster will outshine the Scrambler all day in that category.

You know you're so wrong, I have a scrambler FT and an 1100s monster both well modded and I can assure you that the scrambler attracts way more attention than the monster must be the old school looks.
My personal favourite is the monster but hell what do I know... [bow_down]

Geoff... [coffee]

I’ll prepare for the backlash in advance but......
In my opinion, the Scrambler doesn’t even belong in Ducati’s lineup. Ducati has never been about watered down retros until they became popular with the current generation. I cringe at the videos on their Scrambler website because I’ve always associated Ducati with high performance bikes (Ferrari of motorcycles). The Monster gets my vote.
That being said-I test rode a Desert Sled and had a blast on it.
Also, buy and ride what you like. I’m no hater. But you asked for opinions.
Cheers,  Steve.

Hmmm...what about the MH900e, and more recently, the Sport Classic series?
