Title: S4 not starting
Post by: mbranchi on July 14, 2020, 01:36:02 PM
Good evening every body, I have recently acquired and s4 that is not running. I knew it when I bought it but it was too nice of a deal to pass. The gentleman the had it before had just changed battery and spark plugs. It ran for about 50 miles then it started sputtering then stalling and then dead.
The bike will crank, here are a few things that I have checked already, coils resistance are within manual values, horizontal plug will spark against cylinder didn’t check spark on vertical . Priming happens during key on, I can hear it and I have also checked by removing hose at end of tank filter  see picture.
What else should I check?
Thank you. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200714/50833ca32cf0ca9182b5ac2025c88eec.jpg)

Sounds like injectors are stuck or relay or fuse blown. Check wiring around the TPS and to the injectors.

Here is a video of what happens when I try to start the bike

https://youtu.be/yc5QUMuY_ms

There is some gasoline mist coming from vertical stack but not the horizontal.

Second video is how I checked for flow in the tank bu removing the outlet tube of the filter.
All fuses are good by ohm meter.

If the engine is cranking that slowly the computer will not have sufficient voltage to work.  Start there.  Easy shade tree, jump start from your car battery, engine off.

Yea that is way to slow. Def voltage issue

Ok I have tried the jump start but still no start. I get it its either fuel or ignition. I have pulled fuel filter and pump out. I have also removed the fuel injectors. Maybe I can have the, tested at the local dealer.

I think it would be better too bring the whole bike to the dealer rather than part by part.  Always diagnose first.  Want to know about fuel pressure?  Put a fuel pressure gauge on it.

That is true and the local ducati dealer is thrust worthy as well so I might end up doing just that. I bought this bike in non running conditions and I thought I would challenge myself to do as much as I can. I enjoy taking the bike apart as much as I enjoy riding it.
This morning I have put a new fuel filter and witnessed the injectors spraying fuel as I was over the stacks during cranking. I guess I have to look at the spark again now.

Got it figured out.
After following unsuccessfully all advices received here I decided to take a look at the timing belts and found them very loose. I was worried about valves at that point but fortunately all valves were ok. Got a new belt tensioner and a new set of belts and tightened at 110hz on TDC. The monster works perfectly now.
