Title: Re-installing Rear Wheel 2001 Monster, help!
Post by: GregP on February 04, 2021, 05:15:01 PM
Just had new tires installed on the old girl and for the first time ever, the rear wheel doesn’t want to go back on. Unfortunately, at some point, the rear wheel tipped over and I lost track of the spacer placement so I need a little love on what goes where. Searched and looked at owners manual but this “extra” spacer is causing me concern.

The spacer in pix 1 and 2 wants to slide into the rear hub in pix 3. Unfortunately when I get it all lined up with the caliper and try to slide it into the swing arm, its just a little to tight. I’m happy to force the issue but want to get some direction before I slide it in.

Please advise. Thanks.

PS: This is the 20 plus time I’ve changed tires and installed the wheel. It’s never been an issue before which is vexing

That spacer is in backwards. The cone goes in.

Well, after a few try’s, the wheel doesn’t want to slide back in, so to clarify, the photos are out of order so please bear with me.

Photo 4 shows both spacers, short and long. Based on ducpainters response, I had the short spacer backwards as shown in Photo 3 and Photo 2 shows it correctly positioned?

So what do I do with the longer spacer seen in Photo 1 and 3? It slides in to the wheel baring regardless of the orientation of the short spacer.

Thanks in advance for your help. I’m getting hella frustrated and I want to go out and scrub in my new tires today!

If I am understanding you and your photos correctly and my memory still works, the spacer in question goes under the sprocket, cone against the bearing on the other side.

So pull off the sprocket carrier, put in the longer spacer, return the carrier and use the cone shaped one on the outside of the carrier? Let me give that a try!

If I remember correctly, the cone against the bearing on the disk side.  I could be wrong, haven't done it for a few years.  The wheel will only fit with all the spacers installed correctly.
