Title: Oil type, brand and breather issues
Post by: koko64 on November 28, 2021, 01:35:56 PM
Used a high quality full synth oil recently in a customers 1100 Evo, but it gets past the breather and onto the floor via the airbox drain tube. Used another brand full synth of the same weight and no problems. I note not surprisingly that the Motul 10/40 7100 pours like water at ambient compared to the Penrite 10/40 full synth which flows like a 20/50. I also note that Motul now make a 10/60 for big bores. I tried the Motul to make the wet clutch less sticky.

A car bloke told me that his crew use Motul in fast 4's but use Penrite in big inch V8's for the same reason.

Anyone have any experience on this?

Yeah, I've experienced a similar phenomenon with 5W-40s. Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck vs Shell Rotella T6. Granted this is in an old MB diesel engine but with the Mobil I had to add more than a topup splash between changes whereas with the Rotella I simply topped up slightly or did not have to top up between changes. Look at the spec sheets for the Motul vs the Penrite and compare the various and sundry NOACKS and shear film strength coefficients etc and you may discover a pattern. If you have ever perused BobIsTheOilGuy forums you might try there, but it's a grouchy place to be and you will get nerded with way more geek signaling than you may have the stomach for. I mean them dudes take it way too seriously but doesn't mean you won't learn anything.

Thanks Booger. I have revisited Georges Memorial Oil Thread here many times. Its a fantastic resource.
I'll check out the site you mentioned.

The need for very specific oil types certainly reflects the incredible range of motor applications out there.

I could form an bad opinion of Motul oils based on the recent big bore experience, but that would be ignorant and unfair. It's all about the correct application. I actually use Motul in my Gixxer 750 track bike which seems to suit its multi cylinder, smaller bore motor that revs to 14000 rpm.

I have always run Motul 7100 15W50 in my M1100 with zero issues.

Multi seems equally happy running the same oil.

Griso runs Motul 7100 10W60.

All "big bore" twins.

My Gixxer likes the water thin 10/40 7100, no issues.
The bike has good compression, runs strong, never did it with Penrite or Shell and oil at correct level. Maybe the problem was it was 10/40. The 10/40 7100 pours like cordial.
I'll try 15/50 next time. Maybe it's as simple as that.

With climate change might have to run 10/60 in summer.  [laugh]

Rotella T6 now comes in 15w40, in case you didn't know.
The Monster and the ST4s seem to enjoy it.  Use to have similar issues as you described using the Mobile 4T.

On a side note...use to run Mobile 0w40 in the BMW E46.  Switched to Rotella T6 5w40...no more oil consumption and improved mpg.

Hope this doesn't become one of those dreaded "oil" threads.   [laugh]

Let's say it's not an oil thread but a thread about oil compatibility with breather systems., clutch design and engine design ;D

I note that  Motul 10/60 pours like honey while their 10/40 pours like cordial. Both the full synth 7100 range.

 Cheers

I use Mobil 1 4T without issues in my little air-cooled 8500rpm L-twin.  I don't really know the differences between it and an Evo.

Guys on the FB local (Dallas, TX) Ducati group snicker and sneer at me for using Mobil 1, according to them, I should expect my motor to seize or throw a piston the next time I take it out.   ;D

Not sure what those on the Dallas FB are worried about.  Ran the 10w40 4T on my 97 monster for a few decades...trying to blow it up.  Still runs.  Wanted an excuse to go to a big bore kit  ;D

The Rotella is cheaper and worked in my car...so why not the bikes too.
