Title: Recommendation for a new laptop
Post by: ducpainter on December 30, 2022, 02:04:48 PM
My laptop died. I have been using a Dell E6430 forever. I'm a fan of the older Windows releases, but I'm kinda reluctant to use 10, and I really doubt 11 is much better.

Apple is not my style either.

Anyone have a Win 2k machine they want to sell?   :P

You can get an Osborne 1 on eBay.

That will work.

I plan on buying Apple in the future.  The reason why is Dell, who supposedly has the best customer support, took years to finally correct issues with the laptop.  In the process, they also lost it.  When they found it they shipped it back to me with a power cord for a medical device [bang]

I have not had issues with Windows 10.  Seems to be a problem when installed on older computers.

What model did you have, and what was the issue with it? I've had a Dell Latitude for the last 8+ years, and it was great until Winblowz left town.

After using it on battery it would not not recognize the power cord.  sometimes rebooting it would work.  Of course, once the battery died you couldn't restart it.  My fix for that was just leave it plugged in.  Then there was another issue that I don't recall.  That is when they had me mail it in and they lost it.  Works great now.

Dell does make reliable products.  My issue is costumer service.

Personally, I am an HP guy for laptops and now the mini-desktop, used/renewed, no cash for something new ... Current Windows 7 laptop is about 11yrs old now, I did upgrade the HDD to a SSD and added some more RAM, 8GB to make it 12 ... Poor girl is very slow now so was only using it for iHearRadio streaming, ocassional visit here, the rest I was working from cell, company did buy me a laptop but, I only use it for work and cycling app workouts ... The tower PCs were, custom built, no issues there until a lighting strike a few months ago fried most electronics in the house that were plugged at the time, yes, even the UPS

Well...

since my hardware was fine, and it was just a matter of Winblowz shitting itself...

I installed Ubuntu Linux alongside the Winblowz install in the same partition. Because Linux is very flexible, and I didn't touch the partition that held all my data, I now have access to all my files.

I'll work on saving my important files in another location, so that when the hardware dies I don't lose everything...again.

I just saved a grand. [thumbsup]

Missus ML would be proud. ;D
