Title: Tuning Thought for the Day. Post by: koko64 on January 21, 2023, 03:40:35 PM It pays to have a flexible mindset and open mind when implementing tuning solutions. Concrete reality just doesnt always play ball! Although this is well known it continues to amuse me.
I have a number of different manometers. They include devices with analogue clock gauges, metal pills in vacuum tubes, liquid tube designs and an electronic fully digital display unit that self calibrates (its awesome). However, I have found that different devices work best with different motor configurations and intake/carburettor designs in order to give the best result. There have been situations when I went completely old school manually synching carbs with a feeler gauge, drill bit or one finger on a carb slide while eyeballing another. Or a bike where I ditch the gas tester and set mixture purely by ear (and nose). Dynos have indicated that everything is perfect but the tune needed an dollop of extra fuel at certain times which only a test ride revealed. There's the theoretical framework of how systems should operate, and the real world. Love this place and just reflecting out loud. Hope you're all well. Title: Re: Tuning Thought for the Day. Post by: Charlie98 on January 24, 2023, 06:45:32 AM It's so hard to find someone that's willing to spend time with whatever they are doing to find the correct solution to a problem. Sometimes it's not what the gauge or other indicator tells you, either... and that's where experience comes in. I see it all the time in my industry (pool equipment and service) where these guys blow in, 'fix' something with no desire to get it completely right, and jet off to the next stop. Very sad, indeed, if that's your barometer of skill.
The auto industry is probably the worst. Because modern vehicles are all electronic, and very often performance and tune is tied to whether or not it will pass emissions (here in the States...) a service tech will put it on the reader, and announce 'everything is within specs!' and call it a day.
