Title: 04' S4R remove monoshock spring
Post by: thegunner76 on February 03, 2023, 03:31:58 PM
Hi, guys

Ive been searching, but it seems the guides I found doesnt compare to the monoshock I have?

If I compress the spring, does the two half-disc at the bottom come of so I can remove the spring without any problems?

You should be able to back off the pre-load adjustment at the top which will allow the split keepers to fall out so you can remove the spring,

If not, compressing the spring will work.

Nice! So the adjustment should have enough clearance to release the load of the spring?

Anyways, Im right about "construction", right? Those split keepers, as you call them, comes of allowing the spring to slip out?

The reason Im unsure is I handed the monoshock to my local MC store (non Ducat), thinking they had some compression equipment. The owner handed it back, saying there was no way to get the spring off without opening the shock (with the necessary refill afterwards)

A picture of the threads at the top would be helpful to determine how much preload is on the spring.

I could be wrong, but I don't think so. Give it a try.

You should try another MC shop for sure. DP is correct regarding spring removal. Often there is enough thread to easily back off the preload to safely remove the spring. If backing off the preload doesn't give enough clearance to remove the keepers you need to be very careful how you compress the spring lest you put the spring through the garage wall, ceiling or your face. A lot of energy there! I have a few spring compressing tools but I sometimes need to give a shock to my suspension specialist who has a heavy duty spring press. The device is a fixed unit which securely holds the shock within it and looks like a bearing press.

Out of curiosity, was there not enough adjustment in preload to avoid using your spring compressor method?

Very resourceful, I must say.

I never tried, Im afraid. It didnt seem to have more than a couple of turns in it anyway, so I went for the spring compression. And I cant take credit of that method [roll] Youtube has been my second best friend, apart from you guys  [coffee]

When it's going back together, try loosening the two nuts. If it works for you it's much safer than trying to compress the spring.

Can't argue with that  [cheeky]
