i got an ultrasonic cleaner which is awesome for cleaning a barrel and parts (pistol, under 5" barrel)

harbor freight has them for $20 now, but you need a coupon (below).. you HAVE to bring the barcode into the store.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

How is this used? Do you have to preclean the parts? What's the benefit, saved time or does it clean them better?

Thanks

preclean it as normal, then drop it in the bath with water and about 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda

the water will turn dark after a while.  you only need 10-20 minutes.

ultrasonic cleaning will remove ALL carbon fouling from the barrel, microscopically.  other parts will benefit as well since grit will wear things like cams out.

make sure to get all the water off after and coat with oil/lube.

the first time i tried it, i was amazed how dirty it got.  the next time i did it, it wasn't as dirty as the crap was mostly gone.

a lot of gun shops offer this as a service for 20-30$.  the bath they use is a much larger setup and they put the entire pistol in, with wood grips removed.. they also use a different formulation to clean, but it is the ultrasonicj motion that cleans, not the solution as much.

Nice.  We use larger scale ultrasonic cleaners here at work, and they work pretty good.
