so, i'll be going to hong kong soon, from the 27th to the 30th.

i'm wondering if anybody here knows good things to do while i'm there?

i know that i need to catch the light show at the harbor, but that's about it.

Definitely go up to Victoria Peak.

Other than that, mostly eating and shopping.

Need a new suit?  You can have one custom-tailored for you in a day or two.

Very easy to get around by public transit.

have fun! :)

Basics:

1. Ride the Peak Tram

2. Ride the Mid Level escalators

3. Visit Man Mo temple on Hollywood Road

4. Take the ferry

5. Go to the horse races

6. Eat at the Floating Dragon (kitche, but its a HK landmark)

7. Have tea at the Peninsula

8. Hike to Amah rock in the New Territories (Try http://www.walkhongkong.com/; its run by a Brit ex-pat)

All those things will be free to inexpensive.  A great place to catch the light show would be at the restaurant at the top of the Pen (can't remember the name).  That won't be inexpensive, but the food's good and the view is spectacular.

Go have a drink at the bar on the top floor of the Penninsula as well and make SURE to check out the bathroom
before you leave too, floor to ceiling windows!
God don't eat at the floating dragon, just take a picture and eat anywhere else, the food sucks there.
Do a Dim Sum lunch for sure, mmmmmmm.
Old style at the Fook Lam Moon on Johnson or like the Serenade in the HK Cultural Center.
The Shang Palace in the Shangri-la is probably the best I have had though, but it's been a few years.

Mmm.. I loved Hong Kong every time I was there.

Every time the hip pulls in 1 get 2 suits. I should have a wardrobe full before I get back. There are TONS of custom tailors. And I'm sure you'll get recommendations from every person that's been there. But, if you're interested, I'll point you towards the tailor that took good care of me and half a dozen buddies every time we pull in.

Kowloon is wonderful for shopping. Both legit and knock off. Hong Kong proper is good for women (mostly knock offs) and "buy me drink" bars. Why are you going to HK?

I also took a running trip that went up and over a couple mountains. It was a lot of fun. Run by an Aussie and a couple Brits. I've got a youtube video of the trip they did. It was a lot of fun. We even saw Jackie Chan's studio from a mountain above.

I try and go to HK at least once a year, fun place... Like everyone says, they've got a tailor they work with when they go there.

If you get a chance, head out to the Stanley Market as well.  They've got shopping for more "american" sized people ... but they've got a few restaurants at the old manor house there ... and you can get a good afternoon tea set while sitting outside looking at the harbor.

Also check out the "ladies market" in Mong Kok.  There's lots to see there ... and the street vendors for the food is good.  I'd also suggest getting the Chili Crab on Temple Street is very tasty too.

I'm sure that everyone will also point you to Lan Kwai Fong, in the central district.

Go to Beer Castle   ;D

A really cool clothing store is Shanghai Tang.  Eat at the restaurant at the top of the Peak.  Check out Tiger Balm Gardens for a weird tourist site.  The bird market is cool and so is Stanley Market.
I'm having a failure to thrive...

There is a very nice walking path around Victoria Peak that you can take from the top of the tram.

The antique shops along Hollywood Road and Cat Street have lots of interesting stuff.

Very important to remember to look to the right before crossing any streets - I spaced out once and almost got nailed.

But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

Have fun, shippie!  [cheeky]  Hong Kong is a good time, though typhoon season is a bit of a bummer...
