I've been geeking out on X-Plane while waiting for the warm weather.  This was my first try at a skin.  It's Ed Force One!

The real deal

I just bought X-Plane 9 (for Mac) yesterday. Haven't even loaded it onto my computer yet. And, I don't have a joystick or anything like that (I need to find a good Mac one). Also will be hooking it up to the TV when I get home. I'm excited. I've been wanting it for a while. I'll probably start playing tonight.

Quick question though, the box says "60+ gigs of DVDs" Is this something I will have to keep changing DVDs for? Or, can I burn all the DVDs to a little portable USB drive?

OK, so I'm one of those sim players who started with Microsofts flight sim way back in the days of the first flight sims.  I bought X-Plane a long while back (must have been version 5 or something) and just couldn't find the love for it because of it's complexity. But then again, I was never playing flight sim games for any aspect of real flight anyway. I always thought that X-Plane had awesome graphics, but the controls were just too freak'n hard manage. All I need it pitch, yaw, and roll, along with an altimiter and airspeed guage. The rest, unless it's a control for afterburners, is just too much for my short term needs for fun - I like to taxi, take off, do some tower flyby's and ultimatly crash. LOL

Cool mods to your plane though!!!!  [thumbsup]

Poke, sorry I flaked out, been busy at work.  No DVD switching.  You can select how much scenery to install by default.  I installed the whole shebang and haven't changed the DVDs except for install.

It's a bit addicting, and the amount of free add ons are daunting.  I connected online for a flyin, it was fun but everyone has to coordinate at one location.  Apparently there are some guys dev'ing an online environment that combines AI and RealI planes to ensure all airports are always humming with traffic.  I'm looking forward to that.

Awesome!

Not to threadjack, but you're obviously a Maiden fan, check out Flight 666!

http://www.ironmaiden.com/flight666/  hopefully coming to a city near you!

I installed the 1st dvd and have been enjoying it for a couple hours at a time in the evening. All I've got is the trackpad (joystick is on order). So, it's a bit more difficult. I'm still learning everything and just getting the hang of flying, taking off, and landing. I'm sure it'll be a bit more natural once I get a joystick. I'm learning on the Cessna and have been flying between the local SF airports (Buchanan, Travis, Shultz, etc.) and I managed to land on the carrier in the bay. I'm still figuring out how to work the auto pilot. But, the auto leveling is working well. I haven't even tried the radio yet.

I did get a nice barrel roll in a 747.  [thumbsup]

It's damn near impossible to do it right without some type of joystick.  I picked up a cheapo saitek.  I'm pretty much in the same boat, mostly flying the cessna 172 between my local airports (Caldwell, Teterboro, and Morristown) and flying the traffic pattern.  Just recently started to get the touchdown flare on some of my landings.

A good read on the basics of flying a flight sim.

Jaman, Flight 666 is the plane I attempted to emulate.  It's pretty cool that Bruce Dickinson is both rock star and airline pilot.
