how do you adjust the chain on a 749? got my buddys 749 in my garage and the chain has way to much play, its whipping on take off, and hitting the fairing on idle.

Which year?  Excluding 05/06 you need to loosen the axle, loosen the (rear) lock nut on the adjuster shaft with an allen key or screwdriver and then turn the (front) adjuster to adjust.  Pretty straightforward.  Torque on the axle nut is a good bit higher than on my monster.  Swingarm changed on the later sbk models and the adjuster mechanism is a bit different.

actually i guess i misremembered (its not my bike) it looks like your 04.

Whats the adjuster exactly? theres a few things that looks like it could be an adjuster. is it the two circiles with holes in them?

Yes, the two discs with holes.  The forward one is attached to the threaded rod and does the adjusting by screwing in/out of the axle plate.  The rear one is the locking disc.  It's a simple mechanism, but sort of goofy.
