Finally 600 miles!! And Exhaust Coring question......

So I hit that wonderful milestone that allows me to take advantage of some of that wonderful power above 6000 rpms! Man it feels good. So torquey (if that is a word)! It also had made me realize what upgrades I want more than others. I thought I wanted the 14t sproket but I think that can wait a bit. I definately want the dual touring seat (Comfort for wife), shorter shift lever, and fender eliminator kit. Can't wait to start the mods.

Now for my typical rant! I re-read the post about 50% less maintenance costs and dealers amaze me. I have three dealers in my area so of course I called all of them to get quotes. I was really rooting for the dealer from which I bought the bike as they did right be me in the beginning so I wanted to keep with them. Well low and behold they quoted me $250. I asked what all that included which was 1.5 hours of labor at $44 per half hour, and parts, though he couldn't tell me what the parts were.... Other two shops were close in price, ~$170-180.

And for my coring questions: I am thinking about coring my exhaust to get the better sound and a lower price then a new exhaust to hold me over until I can get one. I have read things on here stating that there is no problems with coring the exhaust but when I mentioned it to the parts guy at my dealer he tried to put the fear of god in me saying it could cause irreverable damage and power loss by doing so due to the loss of backpressure and this being a performance machine it is set to blah blah blah I didn't understand the rest of the tech jargon he through at me. I am sad to mention I bought it a little bit..... That being said, I am in sales and I know what he was trying to do, sell his $1000 exhaust system versus me paying a hundred bucks or so to achieve the sound I want. So when I had the techs on the phone I figured I would ask them. One had no clue what I was talking about (Unfortunately again at my dealer), second guy was in a rush so I didn't ask him. Third guy said he doesn't see it causing any issues but that I will never be able to put my pipes back to stock.

So I pose the question to you, the knowledgeable (cough cough) masses. What say you about coring? Causes damage or no?  Thank in advance for your constructive responses.

I've been wondering the same thing about modded my stock cans. If you search "cored exhaust" there's a topic with people talking about it and they all to seem there's no major problems. I bought (Today)  a set of stock pipes of CL for $30 to modify for when everything hits the fan. My concern was with performance and fuel consumption, but SaltLick said he hasn't noticed any difference.

Let us know what the dealers/techs say.

Good luck

Also, in San Diego I paid $167 for my 600 mile service, but the question about modding my get more responses in the Accessories and Mods board.

Well back-pressure really isn't too much of a factor for four stroke engines.  Essentially if you were to buy an exhaust system other than the termi system, you would have an open system without the computer upgrade.  This results in the same loss of back-pressure as coring the original pipes.  Take your cans off and run the bike...it will still run fine.  Do the mod, you will enjoy it.  The only thing is, it is irreversible...but it sounds like you will get aftermarket cans eventually anyway.

My maint at 600miles $0   do it all myself... valve adjust  at 6000 is agood reason to have some cold ones in garage..

Coring?... did that no problem, maybe 3 hours total... nice throaty sound..

4 beers, one redneck, and a band saw later.... chopped the whole exhaust off behind the udder...... nice lots of nasty sounds...

I've had my cored exhaust since January. There has been no problems and the plugs look good.  When you core the 696 exhaust, you lose very little back pressure since the cats sit at the front of the cans.  I have done 10 sets of pipes for people all over the country and 5 sets here in AZ.  No blown motors or engine damage. If you look at every aftermarket slip on, they have no back pressure as well. If it were to cause damage, every aftermarket exhaust company would be out of business.....

I'm definitely not an expert on the subject, but I do believe coring the cans will not cause any significant fueling issues.  From what I have read on this forum, most of the back pressure comes from the converter (assuming your bike still has one).  We recently put the Leo Vince 2-1 on the s2r1k with the FatDuc O2 emulator and a sparks mid-pipe and it runs way better than before.  It still needs some fine tuning since the changes in mixture aren't instant, but there is definitely a significant seat-of-the-pants difference  [thumbsup].  We also opened up the airbox and put in a K&N filter at the same time.  All in all, definitely worth the effort until you get a full system.  Now go enjoy that beautiful Duc Music  [evil]

Totally agree here, Ryanracer did mine right after he did his own.  I've run about 3k miles and I have no issues.  Dealer told me I might have poor performance when I had my 7.5k service done but that was after running with them for four months.  It's the dealer's job to push you to not do things on your own and push the company line.  Not being bad, they are just trying to make a buck like the rest of us

I have been running my bike with cored cans for thousands of miles (13,000 ish) not a single hickup.  Plus for looks shorten them looks amazing if they are lowmounts.
I live vicariously thru myself......

Love my cored cans, previous owner did a fine job.  I don't think I 'd trade the sound for Termis.
Cored sounds better!
