3rd gear @ 6K RPM = Dead Spot

So I've been dealing with what I would call a dead spot/surge problem in 3rd gear @ around 6K RPM.

The local canyon road I frequent demands 3rd gear riding - anything else doesn't really work.

Before that mark the bike pulls nice and smooth, once it hits that point it does nothing, the engine revs, the needle jumps to like 9K RPM but the bike is not really moving. Eventually the needle jumps back down and the bike slowly starts to going momentum.

Is this normal? I've tried shifting to 4th gear at this spot which bring the RPMs back to 4.5K or so and that does help a little but I would hate to think that my power band goes dead @ 6K.

The bike is an 07 S4Rs with stock pipes, 14T front sprocket and it has a FatDuc O2 manipulator that I've been playing around with to try and solve the issue.

The fatduc has helped some but has not solved the problem - also - I was having the same problem before the FatDuc was installed.

I'm looking for tips and or ideas to try and resolve the issue. Unfortunately another exhaust is not the in equation financially so that option can't be explored.

Thanks!

Is this true for ONLY 3rd gear? (as in have you tried in other gears)

how many miles are on the bike?

When the needle jumps from 6k - 9k, is the motor turning at the displayed rpm?

If the motor jumps from 6k - 9k with no difference in speed, the clutch may be slipping.

I've had a flat spot at 5k-6k, but the bike just accelerated slower at that point w/ no jumping of the rpm.  Fixed it with a 2nd map tune and other random mods.

On the street 3rd gear is it.  Thinking back I was having the same issue in the higher gears at my last track outing.   Humm....

Mileage is around 7600 or so.

From 6K to 9K there is no speed difference which might point to the clutch.

What do new clutch plates cost?
