if you are adding more weight to the bike ,say another rider.. which way should you turn the rings on the rear shock
should they be turned up or down?

I don't know how your shock is configured zigactly.  You want to turn the rings so that the spring compresses more.  A lot more for a passenger.  You should be able to see which way the threads go.  Though to be honest, unless it's a really long trip, changing the preload on the rear by banging on the rings is probably more hassle than its worth.  Just my 2 cents.

if your bike has a shock adjuster, tighten it up for short rides should be sufficient.
