Speeding & Insurance

I received a speeding ticket this past weekend (70mph in a 50 mph zone) on the Palisades.  I've been talking to various NJ laywers and have gotten conflicting info.  Does anyone have FHE or know of anyone who have FHE on this question:

Up to now, I have a clean driver's license record.  I know the NYS DMV does not apply points from out-of-state moving violations.  What does that mean in regards to my insurance rate?  My choices are to fight it (using a lawyer) and get it reduced in NJ (if it affects my insurance rate) or pay the fine (if it doesn't affect my insurance rate).

"The NYSDMV does not record out-of-state violations committed by NYS drivers in other jurisdictions. The exceptions are alcohol-related violations, drug-related violations, and moving violations committed in Quebec or Ontario. Under special agreements, traffic convictions in Quebec or Ontario are recorded on NYS driver license records and carry points. Except for violations in Ontario and Quebec, points are not added to your NYS record for out-of-state violations."

I'm pretty sure you just pay the fine. It has happened to my friends from NY while in NJ. They love the ability to speed here since there is basically no accountability other than the fine which is miniscule compared to the would be insurance rate increase. I wish it worked the other way around too...

If I were you I would just pay the fine, assuming my advice is sound. Someone else will chime in.

Several years ago, I received a speeding ticket on the Garden State Parkway.  I paid the fine with no insurance premium increase.  I also check NYS DMV a few months later and there was no indication of the ticket on my record.

Last year I got a ticket on NJTPK going 110mph in the car.  I paid the fine, no points, Geico didn't increase and gave me a good driver discount at the beginning of this year for 3 years without an issue.

Your insurance will be fine.

Thanks all!  I'm going to just pay the fine then and leave the good fight to another day...
