Hi guys. I'm a new Monster owner and this is my first post.  I'd like to adjust the handlebar placement on my '02 620 Dark. Basically, I'd like to rotate the bars back closer to the tank to shorten my reach and allow for a more upright riding position. If I rotate the bars back, I need to rotate the controls forward.

My question: Are the controls mounted with any type of locating hardware that prevent mounting at a different angle? I expect I'll need to rotate the controls forward by approximately 10-15 degrees. Some photos are below.

Any help or advice is appreciated.
thanks,
Ted

Usually there are holes in the bars, with a corresponding knob on the switchgear controls, to prevent them from rotating. I don't know if you have them on your bike or if you have them on both electric and lever clamps. Only one way to find out [thumbsup]

Some people will think that an extra hole or two might weaken the bar. The easy way is to grind off the knobs - use a piece of tape to make them stable.

Have you considered the Rizoma bars? They are probably a bit higher than yours (Rizoma are just over 3"). Most importantly they have a sweep back angle which allows for a more (?) comfortable position of the wrists.

i moved my bars forward to give me a better position, but there are little tabs on the light controls and the throttle controls that go into the holes on the handlebar (for alignment). you would have to dremel off those tabs for them to go on.  the only problem though is that by moving the bars back to you, you will have some clearance issues with the bars/controls hitting the tank.

Thanks for the advice.

but I didn't say anything yet?  ;)

easiest way to help get you more rotation back is w/more rise... for tank clearance, like bones has said.

you can buy risers that are shaped to fit the stock clamp, and come w/longer SHCSs, and reuse your stock bars.

and yes, either removing the nubs, or drilling your bars, will let you rotate the controls.

I re-drilled my SM bars, and they don't seem to have affected the strength of it  ;)

Thanks for chiming in. Pardon the ignorance: What are SHCSs?

As mentioned already, the switch gear and throttle housing are indexed to the bar with tabs.  Even so, the levers are not and you can rotate them a bit without moving anything else.  Just get some allen wrenches and try it, see if it's enough for you.  Also, there are little dimples in the bar at the center clamp and the levers.  Line these up with the split in the clamp and you're back to 'stock' positioning.
