Hey I need a new motorcycle, should I buy a BMW 1200GS or an 1198R?

How is everyone offering up advice when you don't know what kind of bike, what kind of riding, and what specific tire in each of the two brands?

At least provide information on what each tire has to offer and let the OP make an informed decision.

I like Pilot Powers for a general purpose tire.  They last a lot longer than a typical high performance tire, they heat up quickly, and have great wet weather performance.  They are not good for a heavy bike and if you do a lot of straight line driving, a Pilot Road would be a better choice.  I don't like them for the track as they have no warning when they let go.  I haven't tried the 2CT versions, they might be better in that regard.

I run Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa Pro's on the 1098.  They don't last as long as a power and don't stick worth a damn in the rain.  But, in the dry they are very sticky and predictable.  I can slide the front and rear and still recover.  There are a lot of other sub divisions in the Pirelli Diablo lineup and performance is very different between them.

For street or track?

For street, neither.  Get the Pilot Road 2.

What would you reccomend if I wanted to do a mix of street and track? And how heavy a bike is bad for the Powers? I'm talking about a 996 - obviously not that heavy, but plenty of torque.

This is where I go against the grain, I run Bridgestone  [thumbsup]

I have been running the BT016 Rubber front and rear and have been amazed at the grip levels and performance, very impressed, they also lasted a quite a while, I did 12000k's on the rear tyre with a mixture of Mountain range running and commuting, It's not supposed to handle wet riding very well, it did much better than I thought considering it's got a very sparse tread pattern.

The front has done a little less (about 8000k's) and has quite a few K's left on it yet, I have just switched to the BT021 Sports Touring Tyre for the rear, Now that I will be returning to the Commuting thing again, and with our wet season coming up in about 4 to 5 months time, I wanted a Tyre with a much deeper tread and more of it, it should be a much better performer in the extremely heavy rain we get in the monsoon season,  and also I want a little longer life from the tyre from Commuting, which the 016 did well, but the Sports touring tyre will do much better.

For a 996 that sees track and street duty I would run the Supercorsa Pro.  They are more track oriented than Powers, but are still fine for the street.  I prefer to error on the side of more grip when it comes to track or even street-sport riding.  If you have an ST or ride 2 up on a Monster then the Powers will square off quickly.  If you run them on the 996 you won't have a problem with weight but you might get cold tearing from all that the torque.  The SC Pro doesn't seem to do this.  My Husky is really light and seems to like the Powers.  I also do a lot of short commutes on that bike and the Powers come up to temp quickly.  If I still had my ST4 I would probably try the Pilot Road 2CT but the Metzlers that were on it were pretty good.  I could wheelie the bike in the rain they had such good wet weather traction.
