as an alternative to ohlins?
found these on fleabay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ducati-Monster-620-695-S2R-Sprint-Pro-Steering-Damper_W0QQitemZ320308720466QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotorcycles_Parts_Accessories?hash=item320308720466&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=72%3A1171%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318#ebayphotohosting
looks promising and much less spensive.

I don't think there is much in the world that could be considered 'comparable" to anything Ohlins makes, but, that being said, I like (and have used) the toby unit many times with good results. I mount them under the triple so the adjustment is available to your left hand. The asking price on your link seems a little high, but I haven't bought one recently.

thanks norm for the insight. couple followups for you if you please:
1) what makes the ohlins so uber good? the larger reservoir? how does this manifest itself from a street performance standpoint?
2) for the frame mount model, is the toby basically mounted the exact same way as the ohlins?

It's been a LOONG time since I installed an Ohlins damper, but it has totally different inerds than most others. I don't want to say the wrong thing, but maybe pressurized with a cartrige?
I stopped using side mount dampers after witnessing frame damage following a crash, so I can't really tell you much there. I always mount them under the triples.

Even cheaper, but I don't know how reputable "vedorsbay.com" is.
I'm considering going for one. I've read one good thing about the Sprint brand, and nothing bad.

The bike went down on the left side, trapping the damper between the ground and the frame and dented the frame tube. Nothing you couldn't ride with as long as you don't mind looking at a dented tube.

Sorry, what I meant was that I cant visualise how you would mount the steering damper under the triple clamp... as in mounted in a transverse manner?? I was interested to know how actually you mounted it.... coz unless I've got my wires crossed.... I'm liking the concept... just cant quite see how you'd do it...

I use a fork clamp or a rivnut on the the left side and mount the right side to a threaded boss on the frame. I'm not sure on the newer models, but Ducati used to have a horn mount over there. You may need spacers to get the alignment right. Always keep the adjuster on the left side so you can adjust on the fly. I can snap some pics if you want, but they will be of bikes that I have built, so the mounting bosses won't be the same as a stock Ducati, but it'll give you a general visual reference.

Take a look at this page:
http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=7727.0
(specifically the Ohlins picture in the "Under Triple" section
)
