Starter Issue?? Maybe

So the other day I tried cranking her up after I replaced the Tank. She started cranking but very slllooowwwwlyy then it stopped. Upon pushing the button I hear a tic from the starter. So I figured it was the battery since she sat for a few weeks. I went out and bought a Dry Cell Ballistic from my local shop in NJ http://www.motochanic.com/. Great guys by the way, always helpful.
Turns out that it wasn't the battery. With the new battery in the gauges do their thing. The fuelpump is alive, lights come on everything is normal. Hit the starter button and I get a TICK.

So I check all the fuses (all good) I check the cables (all good). I grab a hammer and tap the starter without pressing the button and i hear it spin slowly. I hit the button and it spins slowly and stops. then tick, tick, tick.

My conclusion is the starters bad. Can I check anything else before buying a new starter?

Is there a procedure on removing the starter?

I went through a few threads to see if I could troubleshoot to make sure I tested the starter correctly.

I jumped the + terminal to the only cable on the rear of the starter while the key was turned to on and the bike in neutral.

The starter made no noise and most importantly did not turn. The tick sound i heard was actually coming from the solenoid. and when the button is pressed it ticks.

My conclusion is its the starter. Can someone confirm I have tested correctly. Thanks!

Assuming the connection from the (good) battery to the starter was good and you have a good ground plus the engine turns mechanically, yes.  Put positive to the lug on the starter, not the bolt.  Make sure you have a good ground from the engine to the battery.  Make sure the bike is in neutral since you are bypassing all safeties.

Three bolts hold the starter in.  One is hidden by the side cover so the side cover needs to be removed.  Use care removing the bolt from the starter lug.  The lug is easy to break.  And remove the negative cable from the battery first.

I pulled the starter today and connected it to a spare battery and got nothing. New starter on its way. Thanks everyone

Well, what was the problem?

The starter was bad. After pulling the old one and testing it with a good battery it wouldn't run. Ordered a replacement when it arrived i connected it to battery it spun. Popped it in sealed the case. Few hours later added oil and she fired right up.
