IS IT FROM ALL THE CRANKING WHEN TRYING TO START IT? LETTING IT IDLE FOR SO LONG? I JUST DONT WANT TO BUY A WORKING ONE FOR IT TO HAPPEN AGAIN.I DONT SEE A SECOND HAND ONE BEING CHEAP :-( ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT

Howie

The coil zapped you, but the spark is too weak to see?  I'm confused  You were looking for spark where?

COOPERSDAD

was checking on the head, the spark seems to come and go from the coil but when its theres its really weak

Howie

If you have an ohm meter and your coils are stock, primary resistance (across the small terminals) should be 3.4 ohms + 10% and secondary (from coil wire to ground) should be 12 ohms + 10%.  The spark plug cap should be 5 ohms + 10 %.

I see you posted while I was typing.  It is possible you may not have had a good ground while testing or had too much of a gap.  Does the misfire switch cylinders when you swap coils?  You might want to invest in one of these

or one of these

The first one you can make yourself.

when i swap the coil from cylinder to the other side the spark stops on that cylinder so its deff a coil, why would it give way?

Howie

Coils can and often do last a long time.  Yours probably lasted over 10 years.  They can fail from a winding opening or shorting, often intermittent.  Insulation can also fail, allowing them to leak, usually a wet weather problem.  The coil, which is really automotive talk for step up transformer, is constantly subject to heat and vibration.

i spose it just one of those things that cant be helped.me washing it prob had something to do with it although water cant get to the actual coil, trying to start it for an hour or so prob didnt help, letting it idle prob didnt help,i hope i can find one 2morrow without to much more outlay and hopefully it dosnt brake again as i really enjoy the duke, ive  had my fair share of bikes and this one is deff my fav by far and i chose it over a gsxr and an r6

Howie

[evil]Easy for me to spend your money, but here is a good upgrade from our friends at
http://www.ca-cycleworks.com   and, yes they will ship to your country.
DynaCoils kit w/wires (pair)     Monster, 750-900SS     DynaCoils     $199.00
Any fitment questions, call Chris Kelley.  As AFAIK, he sells a plug and play kit.

Do I have them on my bike? No.  As long as my 9 year old, 54K coils function fine I won't spend the money, but if one fails I will go that route.
