M696 Short Tail Kit Install
«

Hello again everyone. So I made my purchase of the M696 and like most everyone else I find the stock tail a bit too much. So I made the purchase of the short tail kit, the $230 model (ouch!), and was wondering how difficult it is to install? I've done a little searching on this but haven't uncovered much. Any suggestions or feed back from other M696 owners that have installed this kit?
Here is the link to the one I purchased...

Looking forward to your recommendations and tips. Thanks!

They're pretty easy to put on. It just takes time tucking the wires and the latch release cable. I have the R&G tail tidy, which was pretty easy to put on because it was a one piece. The only problem with these fender eliminators is that sometimes, the holes don't line up perfectly, like mine.

I have that one. My dealer installed it and cut the plate holder and painted it.

My dealer installed mine. I cut the excess with a dremel tool.

Thanks for the input. I feel a little more confident now and now it gives me a reason to go out and buy a Dremel!

No problem. I basically just scored the metal with a cutting wheel and then used vise grips to remove the excess.

Hello,
I'm doing the tail-chop on a 696 next week. why do you not like the Competition Werkes tail-chop kit? (that was one of the ones i'm looking at)
i did the chopping of my M900 with no problem, are there any suprizes i'm going to encounter with the new frame style?
thanks in advance!

Doing this will probably be much easier than the m900, no cutting, just bolt it up. Mostly an exercise in assembly. Don't tighten things all the way down until you match up all the holes, etc.
most don't like the Comp Werkes due to the cheapness of it, basically sheet metal with unfinished edges. Also, it comes unpainted. Having said that, it's probably the least expensive, price-wise.
I also went with the R&G tail. It comes already painted black, made out of some fairly thick stock & puts the plate right below the front edge of the tail light. Cost wise, it's between the Comp Werkes & DP kits. I paid about $175, if I remember right.

I installed the Ducati parts one on my previous 696. It was more tricky than I expected to get all the holes lined up for some bolts that have to pass through several pieces (on both sides). The end result wasn't aligned perfectly, but was the best I could do.
I didn't find the seat release or other bits a problem.
Then again, I'm no spanner jockey.
