Live Fast, Die Young, Leave a Beautiful Corpse

« on: July 28, 2009, 06:10:02 PM »

Well, I've decided my poor mans clubmans (stock bars inverted) just aren't cutting it anymore.  I'm stretched too far forward and there's not enough pull back on the ends to give me a comfortable ride.  I purchased some 8-way adjustable Apex clipons awhile ago and got discouraged when I had the coffin reservoir fitment issue.  I've gotten to the point where I want to do a few changes to the front end.  I'm going to do 6 changes to the front end:
-Install the Apex clipons
-Swap out the coffins for Rizoma cylindrical reservoirs (26, 27, or 35ml?)
-Lower the headlight and gauges
-Change out the lights for blue LED's
-Paint the light trim ring black
-Put on CRG shorty adjustable levers

My main concerns is swapping out the reservoirs, changing to the shorty levers, and lowering the gauge cluster.  Any advice on how to go about this on a 2002 M620?  Thanks much!   bow down  bacon

Lowering the gauges is a pretty straight-forward, if slightly involved, process. TAftonomous offers a headlight lowering "bracket kit" that lets you mount the gauges under the triples. Discussed in detail HERE.

The reservoirs may prove a bit more difficult. Pretty sure that the coffins MC's are cast as part of the masters. Not sure you can remove them without, like, grinding them off at the base. Fortunately, master cylinder sets pop up on eBay all the time. If it turns out you'll need new MC's to use the remote reservoirs, keep your eye out for the weird-looking, triangular-reservoir SBK MC's. Those ungainly looking reservoirs ARE removable, and since they're "ugly" they can often be had for small money.

I'm assuming here that you mean you're going to switch from the coffin to the goldline masters, w/rizoma pee cups?

otherwise I'm lost.

if that's the case, the goldlines are a direct swap. the fittings for your brake and clutch lines are reusable  waytogo

for kicks, I did my clutch slave at the same time, since I had to bleed it anyway.

*if you are switching to goldlines, you will need the brembo top clamp that is threaded for mirror mounting, or switch to barend mirrors

see where the masters clamp on the handlebar? it's top/bottom, not front/rear like the coffins...

brembo makes a top piece for these that are threaded so you can run normal mirrors

WOW! That looks just like what I want to do to my '93 M900. What kind of bars are those? Hard to tell from the picture, but will a set of adjustable Showa's fit there without hitting the bars? Looks like it. I have a set of them just waiting to go on my bike but the bars the previous owner put on are in the way. I was thinking clip on but this looks way better. And those are Brembo gold line 996 style, right? Hmmmmmm.

Do me a favor please: PM me or post the type/style/cost of that setup so I can go looking and get a budget together. I think the only difference on mine would be to keep the Givi windscreen it came with. Looks awesome and I bet the position is comfortable. Let me know. Thanks.

if you do mean swapping to gold lines wi rizoma pee cups. Then you should take the opertunity to change your brake lines at the same time.
And if 4 pad caliper float your boat then now is the time.

actually, you'll want to click here- http://www.suburban-machinery.com/duchypmoto.html

I don't have an S*R  Wink

the M1 bar is the older monster bar, and has clearance for adjustable forks (there are pics)
don't remember pricing on all the bits, but I got the masters from motowheels... iirc the 996/8 were the small pivot masters, 916 was large pivot? bah... the newer ones were small pivot, which is what I got.

oh, and I did re-drill the bars for the controls. they weren't where I liked 'em. YMMV

everything that I put on at the time:
SM bars
goldline masters
evoluzione slave cyl
new grips
rizoma barends and mirrors

Thanks! Yeah, the previous owner put the M3 on there and now I can't put the adjustables on. I'll need to budget in the M1 and sell the M3. BTW, the coffins do fit on the M3 but depending on the angle you just can't hold a lot of fluid in them. I think with either one of these bars the gold line with remote reseviors is the real deal. I agree with new lines. While the old ones actually work, they aren't quite right. Actually the PO of the bike ran the clutch line up around the speedo totally blocking it because he was too lazy to do what I did: take it off, stick it in a vise and bend it a tad. How fast am I going?

Sheesh, another $600-$700 mod looks like. Well I guess I knew this was coming. This is my first Ducati and I've seen friends go through this. Ducati has a lot in common with Jeep's: real good base with a billion improvements and aftermarket parts available. Very fun and very wallet emptying.

4 Pad Brembo's? Love to, but it seems to stop well now and I think FCR 41's are higher on the list. Getting the suspension first is the priority as I weigh like 135 and it rides like a pogo stick. Others on the list: 14 tooth front, new oil pressure indicator, new sidestand switch, longer sidestand, new nuetral indicator, better shifter, rear seat cowl, better blinker setup, rearsets that'll work with the Aroow high mounts on there, new clutch (has original with 20k), etc, etc...

This board has been a great resource for me. I've gotten parts, great advice and direction. Thanks everybody! This place rocks!  [moto]
