Getting back on the road

Hi, my name's Jason and I have a '99 M750 dark. I'm what you'd call a *bad owner*. 6k miles, not garaged. Since it needed a valve adjustment and I didn't have the time or money to get it done I let it sit. I know, I know. But I'm trying to make good and just rebuilt the carbs & fuel pump. Just a minute ago I fed a few drops into the carb and tested combustion, I've got ignition and looks like I'll be back on the road in no time.
One bummer is that my gas tank is rusted shut - can't turn the key. I'm beginning to resign myself to a new tank, since I drained a lot of rustwater out of the old one (I'll even consider buying a clean, dented tank, which pains me to no end). My first option would be a replacement keyless racing gas cap, but I'd like to clean up the old locking cap & key assembly and put it in the new tank. Anyone got an idea on how I can get the old cap to open in order to remove it, short of cutting the tank in half? Is it best to not use the old tank anymore or can I try and clean it out and possibly coat it?
I was the first one on my block with a Monster, since then there's been a crop of Ducatisti sprouting up in the neighborhood - Louisville KY. It's my 3rd bike, my first was a little Yamaha RD60, and then a Suzuki GS450. I think I'll hold on to the monster for as long as I can, the simplicity of a carbed system can't be beat and it's one of the last of the dying breed.

Why do roaches always die on their back?
That because the survivors flip them over to steal their sneakers and wallets.
