Metal Shavings on drain plug, how much is normal?

Is this normal? 08 S2R1000 at 22,500 miles? Has looked like this on previous oil changes.Bike runs and shifts fine.

Don't know if it's any help, but I recently pulled one out of a 998 with 4000 miles that looked pretty close to that

At 22,500 miles I'd think the break-in is complete.  How many miles was it between oil changes? 
My bike had some SCARY stuff stuck to the magnet on its first oil change but I change the oil ~every 2K miles so maybe it doesn't have enough time to build up like in the pic.  But - better stuck to that magnet than floating around the engine.

Hmm... How'd the oil SCREEN look. Any large chunks? If not, i'd say make the beast with two backs it... What are ya gonna do about it anyway? Probably you would just finish the valve adjustment, and ride it hoping it doesnt blow up ;D so go for it!

Just noticed wrong forum should be in Tech. The screen just had a couple bits on it. I have a few months warranty left. I'll see how many miles I can get on it before it runs out.

To me, it looks like a lot. But mine only has 7500 and the most I saw was about half that. Not sure if it gets worse as time goes on.

well the amount of debris adhered to the magnet all depends on how much oil is in your motor. I recently ran my motor completely dry in an experiment to see how strong the magnet on the drain plug was.....

After much noise which resembembled a pig with its testicles caught in a meat grinder and smoke like you would not believe I stopped the bike. .......well it stopped by itself from 92 mph and burned a hole in the rear tire.That was where the smoke was from.
In true motorcyclist tradition I said oh pooh and went off in search of mass quantities of alcohol to make the plug removal all the more interesting with my precision tools. (A four pound hammer and a pair of vice grips)

The plug came out with some of the case attached........hhhmmmmm seems like superglue might work here to fix that.

Anyway, I did notice some metal attached to the magnet and I decided to weigh it.........

There was 7lbs 4 ounces of metal on the magent , which tells me those Italians are really using good magnets!!

Some of the metal bits were easy to indentify and other posed a problem , but in the end I found that the green bits were actually from the grenade that was once my bike's engine.

There , know you know how much metal is normal when you run without oil. [laugh]

The picture posted was normal, there will always be swarf(metal filings) in your motor no matter what.

Just ride the snot out of your bike and stop worrying about stuff like this.

Exactly, just run the snot out of it. It should be fine. The manufacturer has tolerances on all of the componants. If some start out a little tight, then you get a little more wear.    Squid- you used the word "swarf" I assume that you have done some machining in the past. New guys at my shop don't that  is a word when I use it. And I use it quite often. Great word.

I don't know but I'd say as long as it all feels soft to the touch you should be okay but if there are a lot of hard bits then that would be a lot worst.
Life is never ours to keep, we borrow it and then we have to give it back.

03 800 - 26,000 mi had similar shavings on it; maybe not as much ... but the key IS it runs and shifts fine! no worries.  Your putting lots of miles on her; so maybe use the best oil you can find; personally I like the motul V300 full synthetic green; also I use 15W 50; as recommended by my local Ducati dealership; shifts smoother and seems to run cooler .... everyone will have a different opinion on oil but get the best you can buy and change it often ... 1+ squidwood; hes being cheeky cause hes frustrated by relationship headaches and is taking it out on his bike ...  ;) down boy ...  [moto]
