So I want to install the a power cable for my Garmin GPS on to my Monster 2008 S2r1000.  When I did a similar project on my Harley, I ran it from the battery, under the seat, under the tank bib, and right out by the steering head.  It looked ok.  However, I found out later that my Harley actually has a harness for electrical accessories that would make for a cleaner install.

Any recommendations for wiring up my Monster?  I figure I an go from the battery and run it under the tank, and it should should look fine, but I wonder if anyone has better ideas.

p.s. instead of using a RAM mount type holder on the handle bar, I am using an SW-Motech/Bags Connection bracket that attaches to a Bags Connection tank bag (all from twistedthrottle.com).  The whole set up (gas tank ring attachment, bag, GPS bracket) is pretty slick.  I like it so much I actually bought 2 bags (one for touring and one for day trips).  I will post some pictures when I finish the install.

There is a 2-positions "Maintainer socket" on the s2r. You can find it on your electrical diagram. Number 19 on my 06 model. I'm pretty sure it will be the same for 08 models if Ducati hasn't removed it to save a few $$. I know it's not on the s4rs Sad

According to 06 s2r electrical diagram:
pos1 = 12VDC direct feed from battery
pos2 = Ground
You might want to put a volt meter to double check.

The connector is a direct LIVE off the battery. IF you plug into it make sure you have a way to power off the GPS unit or make sure it has some sort of a power saving mode. Cause it will drain your battery even if the bike is keyed off.

I'm not exactly sure on its location, but I'm going to guess under the tank. According to the electrical diagram it's a female and a dummy male connector housing to keep dirt and moisture out. You can reuse the Male housing. You'll need the male pins for it so that it mates with the LIVE female bit.  PM me and i'll be more then happy to send you a few of the pins. I have plenty for this family of connector.

I'm going to guess it's probably there for tooling?  Or a GPS  cheeky

You might want to consider using a switched supply, so that when you turn your bike off, the GPS turns off.  That way there is no chance of leaving the GPS on when you get off the bike.  I'm guessing your GPS unit does not draw too much power, so you could probably tap off of the 12v tail light wire.

Otherwise, use a separate relay switch, and have the power come from the battery, and the switch control from the tail light.  You can wire in all accessories this way, assuming the relay is rated for the amount of power they will all consume together.  This is how i have mine setup, with an Autocom audio system, a 2-way radio, a radar detector and heated grips.

+1 on those SW-Motech products!  I have a tank bag, and love it.  I doesn't touch the tank, so it never scratches it!
