So 20k and my chain is shot.

I'm looking to buy a new DID but I also want to get new sprockets at the same time.

My 05 S2R800 comes with a 41 tooth rear. I want to upsize this to a 43t or 44t rear w/ a stock 15t front setup but I have a few questions

1) I have a 520 chain do I need to change to a 525 chain if I do this modification.

2) Whats the difference between a 525 chain and a 520 chain?

3) If I upsize the rear sprocket, I'm assuming that I will have to add links to the chain. What length chain should I get?

Thanks in advance..

having to change to a 525 will depend only on whether or not you are able to find the sprockets in your config in a 520 or not (and vice versa) so you do not HAVE to as long as they are made

the 525 chain is basically a beefier chain with larger roller dia and side plates

most chains come longer than is needed or are offered in a longer length and you would then need to size to fit once on the bike. Your manual should give you the stock length. IIRC, I ended up 2 links longer when I did mine (14/43 to a 15/46) (long story involving BST's  ;D)

I just did a quick look up at my fav site and they say the stock length is a 104 link.  [thumbsup]

EDIT: and to add to yuu's links below (this is where I got my stuff in one convenient & matched package for quick change):

*D'oh too slow... hypurone managed two posts while I was doing 1

1 - No.

2 Width of the rollers. So width of the sprocket too

3 - Chains are sold in length that are intended to be cut down for your application.  Stock is 104 links.  So a 108 chain will probably do, a 120 link will definitely do

And for future reference

-Throttle's on the right, so are the brakes.  Good luck.

The difference between a 520, 525, and a 530 is in the width of the chain between the side plates.   The spacing is the same between the pins, but I believe there is a 1/16" (.0625) difference between each size.

Here, decipher this.

ELL,

I did this already.   [thumbsup]

I got all the parts at nichols, and the prices were very competitive with what's online.

Stock style sprockets are $$$.

Go for the quick change.  More $ up front, but you might save down the road.

Give me a call if you have questions.

+ 1000 on CA cycleworks.  They will get you exactly what you need at a very fair price!!  [thumbsup]

Does anyone know of a source for a 520 rear sprocket with more than 48 tooth count.  My 620 is due for a chain and sprocket again, currently I have a 14 - 46 set up on it as I had trouble finding the stock 48 tooth rear.  After I raised the rear end of the bike the chain begain rubbing on the swingarm guide more than I would like.  I would like to go back to a 15 tooth in the front to help with this rubbing, but I do not want to loose gearing on this bike at the same time.

I run a 15/43 setup with the stock number of links on my S2R1000, no problem on my bike.

Check the offerings from Vortex. I think they make some stuff in the 50s
