None of his make the beast with two backsing business would have been my response. If they are not illegal in your state, then it is of no concern to him why you own one.
A cheap POS one?
Didn't you have a Valentine One?
Radar detectors are legal in my state, so yeah he was just busting my balls. I honestly couldn't remember what brand the detector was, it was about 12 years old. I usually get them at radio shack for around 60 bucks and have one in every family car. The only ticket I've ever gotten was when I didn't have my radar detector with me.
I just got some estimates, cheapest is $265 installed, out of pocket. My deductible is 500 bucks. I may do it myself but havnt really taken a look at whats involved. I've replace window motors before though.

No offense taken, I've been called nuts for as long as I can remember and it's a pretty decent description.
I hit 200k on my '06 Mazda 3 last week.
Now to jack my own thread...car depreciation is going to kill me. Do you basically throw away a car every 4-5 years? At this rate I do 40k miles a year, but hopefully buying myself a place to live in that time frame.
I don't mind the driving at all, its the idea of the mileage that kills me.

I feel like many people replace cars because they simply want something new, or the interior bits have worn out to some degree, not because the car's mileage is sufficiently high to be a problem. Hell my '01 Tahoe has 200k from driving back and forth from Memphis to Atlanta for a couple years, and it doesn't "NEED" replaced anytime soon. Sure, I want something new eventually, but it doesn't actually need replaced.

Common crime right now. Don't leave a GPS, IPOD, cell phone, or anything else in sight. They don't leave prints either, they break the window and reach in for the items. Tint your windows if you can, make's it harder for them to see in and makes it harder to get in (tint holds the glass together).

Yeah Basically every 5 years it's replaced. They're pretty much done by then anyway, it's the city portion of the miles that I think hurts them most. NYC roads are as terrible as ever right now. My job reimburses me for the car payment so it's not so terrible otherwise I'd be doing it a different way. BTW, the Mazda 3 so far is holding up way better than it's predecessor. a Corolla.
On topic though, I really do intentionally make sure the car is a bit untidy inside and that nothing of value is visible. I also randomly return to it and look like I'm "a bit off" when I do if anyone is in sight. Never had a problem in the city yet.

That's definitely a little over the 15,000 miles per year standard/average

60k on that car, couple thousand on the truck, 15-20k on my wife's car and 5 or 6k on the bike.

I would have been a smart-one and asked the officer why he carries a knife(to cut things)...or a flashlight(to light things up)...or a gun(to put holes in things)

Someone smashed the window with a brick to get inside. It's unclear whether they were trying to steal it and gave up or were just looking for stuff to steal.
My radar detector is missing.
It was a cheap POS detector but worked. I got lucky.
Could've been worse. Friend had his Miatas top slashed last week and his radio stolen. Radio was worth $50, top was almost $600 to replace.

I just replaced the passenger side glass on a Cayenne Turbo because someone wanted the radar detector inside. My bill to the customer was around $1,000. Had to remove the seats and part of the carpet to get all the glass out. Also, windows are a pregnant dog on Cayennes.

Something I have to worry about with the Touareg as well?

I honestly don't know for sure. Don't know if the doors are the same construction or not. Most likely they are. Just don't get it broke into.
