Shiny spot on my header from chain rubbing

As previously stated, maybe an alignment issue.  Other than that, I've got nuttin.

I have 07 695 and I have noticed the same thing on my header.  I noticed this wear pretty much shortly after I bought the bike (purchased new from dealer). It was with the stock chain and I check the tension on it regularly.  The wear mark is probably between 1/4 and 1/2 inch long.  It doesn't seem like it is rubbing a lot, maybe once in awhile.   I did replace the chain at the beginning of this past riding season and made sure that the everything was in correct tension and also aligned properly.  I am not noticing it getting worse so that is why I am thinking it is a once in awhile rub, or not at all now.

This might be way off but just a thought, could be caused by aggressive hard/fast deceleration?  I mean if you are slowing down fast or downshifting from a high rpm the chain will be slowing down quickly and that energy has to go somewhere and maybe the chain is get a momentary wave in it and get a little bit of slack in it.  The wave could travel in the vertical plan and also could travel in the horizontal plane and cause the chain to momentarily hit the header.

Just a thought.... ;D ;D

shouldn't there be a chain guide there that would keep the chain from moving laterally?

My M620 chain is not rubbing and there is a block there with a center rib that rides between the chain plates.  It looks like it will keep the chain from moving laterally, but it's not very high and it looks like a loose chain could ride up over it and move sideways.  From the picture eesnas posted, the guide is there on his bike.

I think ducmon695 has a reasonable explanation along with maybe some frame flexing and I don't think it's all that much to worry about.
