Yellow Liquid residue on frame.....possible cause?

So I found some yellow residue on my frame today. I noticed it while  I was installing my new belly pan. It seems like it was coming from the bolt that holds the tank to the frame, but I've never seem it before. Anyone have any FHE or seen it before?

That looks like fuel residue.

I'm afraid your hinge is leaking.

It should be brazed and the interior of the tank coated. I like POR-15.

The paint will be damaged from the heat of brazing, but if done with skill it will not be visible when the seat is installed.

There is another possibility for the source of the leak. It is possible the fuel sender is leaking either from the o-ring or through the sealing epoxy for the wires. If you thoroughly clean and dry the area and then spray with an aerosol powder the source of the leak will be apparent.

thanks for dropping tha knowledge DucPainter, you've been a big help. A couple questions tho:

1. Is this brazzing and coating something I can do or should I just send it to your shop  ;)

2. when I lift up my tank on one side there are the fuel lines leaving the tank and the other is a plug with a couple wires coming off. Is that the fuel sender?

3. the aerosol powder you talked about, is that available at HD or Lowes? or is it something rare and special, Like virginity these days

If you have ox-acetylene torches you could braze it. You could also coat it. The hardest part is blocking off all the openings.

I sand blast the heat affected zone and epoxy prime. Because it's out of the light it holds up extremely well even without paint.

The plug with the wires is the sender.

The aerosol powder is much more common than virginity.  [clap] Go to Rite-Aid, CVS, or any discount drug store and get spray foot powder. ;D

Ok, i dont have any of those things (sand blaster, torches, virginity primer) next question would be, what should i use to clean that residue off my frame, and underneath the tank area. I want to clean it thoroughly enough so i know when i spray the foot powder it is only showing new stuff.

Try simple green. What you're trying to remove is the fresh stuff not the dry residue. Then dry it as quickly as possible. As soon an you spray the powder you'll see the source of the leak as the powder will turn brown where the fuel is leaking out.

Don't listen to him anymore.  Just send him the tank, he'll make it good and you will be happy.  Using a fuel tank to learn to braze might not be your best option.   ;D
