Battery woes

2009 Monster 696  -  the stock battery does not hold a charge very long.
Looking for replacement.  Before I perform the tedious task or tearing half the bike apart, can someone give me the exact dimensions of the stock battery?

- Or the name and model of a known replacement - that way I can pick up the dimensions online and shop for an AGM replacement

Warranty?  Yes, I think so, apparently a know problem with this bike.
I know it will die after @ 4 days without being ridden.  So always on a battery tender.

Dead battery today after 30 miles ride yesterday.  Forgot to put on the battery tender last night.  Dead today.  Cost not important when it is a beautiful Sunday for canyon carving and the guys are riding and I am sitting home.

Rather than take what the dealer offers, I am willing to buy the best battery I can find.  Probably an AGM.

The battery your bike came with is a high quality AGM, as will be the warranty replacement, if you need one.  You may have a charging system problem or a parasitic draw.  Get your bike to the dealer!!

+1 to what Howie said.  If it's just the battery that's under warranty.  If there is a charging system or electrical problem that is also under warranty.  Have the dealer handle this.

Well I pulled the battery out and as Howie says, it is a high quality AGM  -  a Yuasa AGM actually which is about as good as it gets.
I had it on a 2 amp trickle charger overnight and can only get @ 5.4 volts.  Pending further tests this is good evidence that the battery is defective.

First week I had the bike (4 months ago) it went dead when not ridden for 4 days.  I was cautioned that this was not abnormal.  Hard to believe.

Been on a battery tender since then when not ridden and no problems.  Except I forgot it after Saturday's ride.  Dead Sunday morning.  So this battery has a history of problems.  And I recall reading similar tales on this list.  Any guesses as to what the problem is with this model.  Inadequate charging system, bad batch of batteries, drug addled owner, an evil djinn?

Dealer told  you that a dead battery after 4 days of no riding is  normal??  Aaaargh.

I'm just clutching at straws trying to find a simple solution - it sound like the dealer may have installed the Battery Tender SAE connection cable to the battery.  Maybe they left the connections a little loose at the battery.  It doesn't take much to interfere with charging.

Are you sure you had a solid and clean connection when charging the batter off the bike?  Sometimes those little battery charger clamps do not make a solid connection and you need to wiggle them around.

It sounds like you have a voltmeter, which is a good thing.  I'm not an electrical guru but I suggest checking the charging system output when you get the battery back in the bike with clean and tight connections.  Howie outlines what it should be on a similar battery thread on this page.  Even if you do end up have to take it to the dealer it really helps to have all the background information on the problem that you can get.  Having some knowledge also keeps the dealer from being able to BS you.

The finale:  Dealer today confirmed the battery is defective (bike is 4 months old and 620 miles) and replaced under warranty.  No problem - good dealer.

Also, FWIW, another guy at the Ducati shop confirmed that on this model the batteries go dead fast for whatever reason.  A battery tender is almost mandatory unless you ride it every couple of day.

I know my battery has been replaced, not sure what it is.  Regardless, my '03 800 can sit for weeks and will turn right over.  I'd say if you can't go at least a week or two without a bettery tender on a modern bike you have a battery, charging, or electrical issue.  Don't accept that as normal.

Glad you're back on the road again :)

i sincerely hope that whoever told you that was talking out their a@@. the model should have nothing to do with it, unless taking the key out leaves the parking lamp on...besides, i think we would have heard a lot more complaints from 696 owners if this was a "normal" problem
If you drive the nicest car in the neighborhood, work in a cash business, and don't pay taxes, you're either a preacher or a drug dealer...
