I have the big alternator (1999), 3 phase charging system. The bike is carb'd. What keeps me from using a newer alt-case cover? Charging system seems to be the same, shape is near-identical.

I don't have a water cooled bike so I'd be looking at any of the newer monsters or hypermotard or mag version of such. Can I just swap the 'lectrics and such and bolt it all up?

I have noticed there is an electric port or something on some newer alt covers, but not on the newest 2v's (like the hyper).

Example:
Note that it says it will, or could be made to work on any 2v with newer style (98+) charging system

Hypermotard - No plug coming out of case cover:

S2R-1000 - has plug coming out of case cover, perpendicularly:

Note the sealed up port where the S2R-1000 has a plug coming out of it...

Note the big hole in this one like the S2R-1000, where a plug would go:

Is that where the plug I have, that goes in 'laterally' is accommodated on newer bikes?

That hole is for the timing sensor on the newer bikes.

The earlier bikes had all the wires exiting the engine cases near the front.

696 has it in the front as well.

I don't "think" so, but you never know till you try.

I believe the shapes of the actual parts are different. The biggest give away to me is the little cover that goes over the end of the crank (where you'd screw the crank turning tool into). That's a completely different shape and knowing the past experiences I've had I'd expect the actual cover to be a different shape too.

What years do fit for sure you ask. Don't know for certain, but I'd expect anything pre 1000cc 2V to work. But I know there's a difference in 2P or 3P of where the window is on that side.

hope that's of some help

I've wondered about that small crank end cover in the midst of the case being a different size. I wouldn't think they would have changed it merely because they wanted a different look, but that's what I'm hoping now as I look for a replacement. I may end up getting a used one for somewhat inexpensive off eBay or Gotham Cycles to check fitment and post up my results (unless anyone has FHE)

im pretty sure you can get awya without it, but the new covers timing window is located in a different spot so you wouldnt be able to line up the dots in the timing window to find tdc.

hi josh ,
the side cover fits directly , but you must close the little whole
with a plate or plug or something like that .

that you must manufacture by yourself .

there are two threads directly beside so you can fit it .
sidecovers without this wholes dont excists.
