Welp, I'm typically there (less so now that I'm in the middle of nowhere) with two terrified small dogs who would probably be much happier if they had the option to run, what with them being terribly fast and all. All I can do is try and stay between them and the strange dog. This never works well.

I just figure keeping my dogs on a leash keeps anyone who's unsure of their intent from ever pepper-spraying them.

I should add that my dogs have been attacked by a loose neighborhood dog in the past while they were on-leash (this was years ago, different neighborhood).  This dog had been aggressive towards Watson multiple times, on this occasion my ex had them, the loose dog (a lab, no owner in sight) attacked, Watson immediately went belly-up to be submissive, and the dog took a bite out of her chest. >:(  I got home soon afterward and had to rush her to the emergency vet.

The owner apologized, paid the bill when coerced, but still let the dog run around loose in the neighborhood.  After that every time I saw it I called [leo].  It only took about 3 times and I never saw the dog running around again.  I did also carry pepper spray with me on dog walks for a while after the attack.

This is why our dogs get so scared when there is a loose dog running around and they are on leash with no way to escape.

i think the home owners assoc is right, if there is a loose dog out, call animal control to have the pet taken away.  you are not punishing the animal you are punishing the owner.

if the owner is too stupid to not realize what happened and doesn't go around lookign to pick up their pet, then the pet needs to be destroyed or given to another family.  maybe then the person will learn so that they do not lose another pet.

as the other poster noted, after a few calls to the local law enforcement the owner no longer let the dog out.  simple.

i agree with other posters, you do the cordial thing first of just talking to the owner and telling them to keep their stuff in order and if they dont' then you call animal control.  you were nice first and if they tell you what to go do with yourself or tell you to mind your own business then you go the official route.

So....having pets that did nothing wrong put down is a perfectly viable method of teaching people how to take care of them?
If the state had not cut funding for the mental institutions, this project could never have happened.

So the dog isn't going to think he's being punished when he ends up in a cell on death row? And what about the strain and the already overburdened animal control system and shelter? What about the child whose puppy gets put down because his shitty parents wouldn't bother to help him control it?

While perhaps taking the dog away, and finding it a more responsible home might be a suitable punishment - that's not the way it would break down in the bulk of instances. The dog would be take away, put in a shelter that it might not make it out of. While I want this lady to learn a lesson, if she didn't already, the death of her dog is not the way to teach her. It's a way to just have her stew and form resentment toward me and mine, at the cost of a dog's life.

If I thought the dog was a real danger - perhaps I'd persue that avenue. But I don't. I think it's got some manners issues, and isn't so bright for trying to take on my larger dog, but not bad. The bad one in my mind's the lazy stupid lady.

glad your dog is ok.  my wife was out walking around our 'hood with my son recently, and saw one dog attack another, and it was pretty brutal.  the attacker was a german shepherd mix being "walked" by his owner and the owner's young daughter.  the victim was a small chihuahua (sp?).  anyway, the chih. needed to go to the vet for some serious mending afterwards.  the owner of the attacker didn't apologize at all.  turns out the same dog had attacked the same woman's other chihuahua just a year prior.  the guy wouldn't even pay for the vet bills.

some people are jerks.

in any case, you protected your dog which was your primary concern at that moment.  i've done some volunteer work at one of the shelters nearby, and our last resort in breaking up a dog-fight is to stick a finger up the dog's butt.  not pleasant, but immediately breaks up a fight (or anything else going on, for that matter).   [puke]  so at least you didn't have to go that far.

:o Yeah that would probably make me think twice about what I was doing too. That might be better than the ol' snapping a rubberband on the wrist trick to cure bad habits... everytime I wanna smoke I'll just jam myself, oughta be over that nasty habit in no time flat.  [laugh]

What, the finger-jamming or the smoking?

Just jam once with the smoking hand. You won't be willing to put it near your mouth.  [laugh]

There are 200 units in my condo complex and two dogs that are allowed to run loose. Both poop everywhere and run up to us when we are walking our two greyhounds. It's terribly annoying. Our dogs are ALWAYS on leashes outdoors, because if they decided to stretch their legs, we'd never catch up to them. 45 mph in less than three strides is too much for me!

Slide Panda

Well, seems she's learned her lesson at least. Was on my working walk going by when she came out, with both dogs on leashes. At least she's a trainable.
