It's maybe a school thing, being bored in lecture.  I saw people do the thumbaround http://www.pentrix.com/tricks/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=1 in college, and thought that it was cool.  One friend could do the thumbaround and reverse thumbaround http://www.pentrix.com/tricks/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=24 back to back.  That was really cool.

I explained the trick to my girlfriend (now wife), and she quickly learned the regular thumbaround.  I still can't do it properly.

But all that's amateurish compared to the obsession of the devotees on that site learning and documenting and naming dozens of tricks, for sure.
