The wife and I are considering getting a couple. What do you think about it so far? Any issues? Best apps? I have heard some complaints about the camera and about battery life.

We were going to switch to the DROID yesterday at Verizon but they discontinued the 2/1 deal a few days prior.   [roll]

I haven't heard anything about it though. Just looked cool.  I'm gettint sick of the Blackberry's rollerball getting stuck and having to roll it a billion times to scroll down web pages.

My hubby has had one since they came out.  He hasn't had any issues.

Battery life is not that great, but I feel that's completely understandible given is size/apps, etc.

Google Nav is cool.  I just wish one could dim the screen a bit more for night driving.

He hasn't downloaded many extra apps, yet.

The camera is hard to focus, that could be opperator error.

YMMV.

I've had one for about three weeks and I love it. If you read the forums, it seems like everyone is on their second or third, or even fourth Droid. But I dont' see what their problems are, mine works great. Coming from a dumb phone I may be a little biased, but this thing is awesome. The slide out keyboard really isn't my style, but you don't have to use it. I don't talk on the phone much, maybe a half hour a day, but by the time I go to put the phone back on the charger, I'm usually at 30% battery after being off the charger for 16+ hours. And that's with a lot of internet and texting usage. The camera works great in the daytime. It probably takes better pictures than my digital. But at night it sucks, extremely grainy with the flash. But call quality is great. Google integration is amazing. Turn-by-turn directions. Facebook contacts are integrated if you choose. It's amazing how many different and convenient ways you can search for something.

I have noticed some glitches, but I think you can attribute that to all of the different apps I have controlling the phone. Being open source, a lot of these apps control different functions of your phone. Sometimes I think the apps are fighting each other for control, and things get confused and stop working. No major problems for me at all. And the phone works amazing with Google Voice if you have it. Free texting and visual voicemail through the Google Voice app. Web surfing isn't as good as the iphone, but oh well.

Apps I enjoy:
ShopSavvy
Key Ring
My Tracks
Google Sky Map
Apps Organizer
Missed Call
FoxyRing
MotoTorch LED
Layar
Google Goggles (Very impressive. I'm starting to sound like a google fanboy.)
Pandora
Places Directory
SportsTap
WeatherBug
Beautiful Home

Going to try out a new home replacement tomorrow, Home++

I`ve had one since it came out. I really like it. The autofocus on the camera was fixed on the recent update. You need to edit your contacts to be 10 digit numbers with out parenthesis. The only fault I think is that you can not forward attachments in e-mail. This is a known bug and should hopefully be fixed on the next update. The back cover is loose and sometimes when you take it out of your pocket it falls off. I actually lost mine one day. It must of fallen off and I didn`t notice it. they sent me a new one free of charge in two days and it fits a lot better It hasn`t fallen off yet. There are a lot of great free apps. I haven`t bought any yet. Google maps with nav is great. you can press a button on the phone say Nav to " somewhere" or map to " somewhere" and it will do just that. The voice recognition is great. Also Talk to me is a really cool. You say something into the phone and it will repeat it back to you in  a different language.

Fav apps

Talk to me
Qik ( Live video stream from your phone cam)
PKt Auctions Ebay
Google Sky Map
TV.com
Runstar
Nesoid ( Nintendo emulator, they have a few other emulators)
BBC Motorsports
Bubble ( Level)
NYC Bus and Subway Maps

Popeye the Sailor

If the state had not cut funding for the mental institutions, this project could never have happened.

I have the HTC droid. I have been using it for a few months. Very nice phone. These phones
eat battery power though. I just turn off the 3G and WiFi unless I really need it. You can still
receive texts and phone calls and the battery last alot longer.

Thanks for all the opinions and info! Turns out the wife had already bought two and was going to surprise me with them. Unfortunately (or fortunately) I checked email at the wrong time and found out. If anybody is getting one for a present for somebody, keep in mind that Verizon will send a "welcome" email to your home email account rather than just to the phone itself. Anyhow, we are having fun figuring them out and trying out some of the suggested apps. I notice in most of the apps' disclaimers it says they are going to access my contact list among other things. My friends would be pissed if they started getting a bunch of Verizon spam. Has anybody had trouble with that? I don't know what else they would be getting into my contacts for.

lilysmama

Yes, as of yesterday (thanks BP!). So far, it's pretty cool, although I am having some trouble getting my contacts moved over from my LG, but I'm guessing that has more to do with my technological ineptitude than with the Droid or Verizon.

That isn't something I would be worried about, the app should just be accessing it for it's function. I've never heard of one taking numbers and spamming them. Though, you never know what kind of shady people are making apps for these things.

as to the original question, I had a G1 when we were on t-mobile, and my wife has an iPhone now (I didn't want one when we switched to ATT). I think we both honestly liked the G1 alot better than the iphone, and that was the old version of android. I've heard the droid is alot nicer. Battery life is going to suck on any of these new smart-but-not-business-smart phones.

Yeah, Joel bought it online so it was shipped directly to the house.  It turns out there is no application (may not be the right word) for transfering contacts from an LG to the Droid.  Verizon does (did?) back up my contacts to their website and I had to export them to CSV, save them on my computer, and then import them to my Droid.

I felt a little better that it wasn't just my stupidity that was making it so difficult.
