As many of you know I am in the process of doing a fork and brake upgrade on my 996. The plan was to use a set of 1098 forks and monoblock calipers while keeping my OEM Marchesini front wheel so I could keep the speedo drive and eliminate the need for new gauges.
Here are a few pictures of the new 1098 forks and the 1098 monoblock calipers.
I wasn't sure exactly what it would take to make it happen but my friend recently bought an 09 848 so I decided to try it first on his bike to see what I was getting myself into. I guess that'll teach my friend to leave is bike at my house for the winter.
Here is a picture of my front wheel installed on his 848.
While fitting my wheel to the 848 I took a bunch of measurements to figure out what was needed for spacers, hardware etc.
The first thing I realized was that the hub on the 848 is a little different. While I could use the speedo drive as a spacer on the left side, I would need to machine a spacer for the right side. Here is a picture of the gap on the right side that I had to make a spacer for.
Here is a picture with the spacer installed. I still need to put a few finishing touches one it so it looks a little cleaner but you get the idea.
The speedo drive required a little work to make it fit and function properly. First, the stock rotor bolts wouldn't work. I needed something with a lower profile so they wouldn't hit the speedo drive. I sourced some stainless steel M8-1.25 x 20mm buttonhead bolts to use on the rotors to help me get the clearance I needed. Unfortunately the lower profile of the button heads weren't enough so I had to machine about 1mm of the plastic off the inside of the speedo drive. Here is a few pictures of the speedo drive installed. I had to special order the stainless buttonheads so I used 3 regular steel until they come in.
Next up were the brake calipers. The 1098 uses a rotor with a 15mm offset and a 5 bolt pattern so they wouldn't fit on my Marchesini wheel. The stock rotors on my wheel have a 10mm offset and a 6 bolt pattern. That left me with two options. I could try and find a set of rotors from a 998R/996R/748R that had the 15mm offset and the 6 bolt pattern or I could have some 5mm spacers made so I could use the Braketech rotors I just bought a few months ago.
A quick post on the DMF produced an offer from Hooligan machinist to make the spacers for me. So a huge "thank you" goes out to Howard!

With the sapcers installed the rotors fit perfectly in the center of the caliper.
And thats about it. I received the spacers in the mail yesterday so I spend last night installing the new forks. I'm still waiting for the banjo bolts for the brake lines but other than that it's just about done.
