What's happened to the one that's in there?
Not repairable?

I've got the same truck, just a year older with an automatic.

i think a bearing is shot, found some water in lube, and its making funny noises,
i think that its repairable, but i dont have the time or knowlege to do it myself, or the money to pay someone to do it.
ive found used ones with approx. 100k on them for around $500 but still shopping for a better deal or different options

Rebuild it. The last time the POS Getrig 5spd in my 93 W250 died. I did it myself. If it hasn't cratered yet, you can get by with a gasket kit, seals, bearings, throw out  bearing, pilot bearing and a clutch disk. Check on e-bay. might be surpised

Mine was a little more, the rear bearing on the counter shaft exploded, so I had to buy a new counter shaft and cluster gear. Why did dodge pick that POS to put behind a cummins  [bang]  [bang]. Next time it dies ( 60k to 80k miles from now ) I'm switching to a NV 5600.

Get a used one. Ive seen hard parts like gears in the ax15 break. Gears are not included in a rebuild kit and will blow the price way up.

Me personally, i would still rebuild if and this is a big if the gears and case are in good shape. It's the same amount of work to R & R the tranny either way. With a used one you're assuming the previous owner didn't abuse it or it came out of New Orleans ( Katrina ). If you rebuild yours you know exactly what shape the gears, synchro's, and bearings are in. I took a quick glance at e-bay the going rate seems to be around $ 180 for a bearings, synchros, seals and gaskets kit. Figure a day for teardown and cleaning another day for reassembling, I know the pros do it quicker, this is DIY which takes a little longer with trips to borrow a press and such.

i understand the concept of rebuilding the trans, i have all the equipment to do it, i dont have the knowlege or time to do it though, it would be a cool learing project, with the mileage on my truck and the cost of a used one i think that is the way to go.  all the used trannys i found come with at least a 90 day warrenty i think what im going to do is install a used one and thrash it to see if its going to fail within the 90 days if it doesnt fail with me behind the wheel in under 90 days it isnt going to fail.

or so thats my theroy anyway.  right or wrong im still screwed at this moment
