Agreed.

I am not a "boss" per se as you, but my decision is made up the minute you walk out the door.

On the other side - my girl starts a new job on Monday which she interviewed for back in early November that had a definite couldn't-be-slipped starting date of Jan 4 - they told her she'd hear back "within a week", she followed by phone up in 7 days and 10 days and got a gentle brushoff each time, so she gave up on it and kept on looking elsewhere. She heard (from inside sources) that no offers had been made, so followed up by email in early Dec saying "I haven't heard anything, but just in case you're still working things out, I thought I'd remind you that I'd need to hand in 4 weeks notice in the next day or two to be able to make your starting deadline...". They finally offered he the job in the middle of December, then needed to negotiate a 2 week slip in the start date with her...

If you're good at the followup, it's sometimes might help.

Not getting a call right away doesn't always mean that you're out.

Sometimes there are approvals that need to be made before making an offer, and getting everyone to sign off on it can take a while.

Sometimes they have to wait to see what their first choice decides to do before contacting the second choice.

etc.

So I agree, stay in touch to let them know you are still available and interested, but keep looking elsewhere.

If you felt you had good rapport with one of the people you interviewed with you might try calling them to follow up on an email, sometimes they will tell you what is actually going on, which they might not be able to do via email.

I emailed the interviewer on Tuesday and got no response.
Called on Wednesday and received no response.

Today I got an e-mail
Unfortunately, you were not the candidate best qualified for the position you applied for.  However, with your experience and skills, you may be a good fit for another position at ******, and we hope you will consider applying again.
