Why is the DP ECU so special?  It seems like an expensive and coveted mod.  What does it do that a PCIII and a dyno tune cannot do?

The DP ECU eliminates the O2 sensor on models equipped with it. That is what the Power Commander can't do and by not being able to do that the Power Commander is worthless on these bikes.

The shortcomings of the DP ECU are shown when you start modifying a bike beyond just the pipe and filter that it was mapped for. The DP ECU can't be mapped, only trimmed.

The maps are usually okay, but not always. You can generally reset TPS, sync throttle bodies, play with the air screws, and trim it to make the bike run and idle nicely with the DP ECU. This is for the street or light track duty.

For a serious race bike where power matters, you must custom map to get what you need. If you are using a bike with an O2 sensor this means buying the DP ECU AND a Power Commander or the Rapid Bike and O2 emulator. The Rapid Bike option is cheaper by about $900 assuming you have custom maps made for both setups. That price doesn't hold if you are using a Termi pipe though as the cost of the ECU in the kit is a fraction of what it is alone.

This brings us to another question...which bikes have 02 sensors?  Is there a list?  Can I assume that all F.I. bikes do?  My '04 S4r?

Not all do - some are Euro 3 some Euro 2. I'm not aware of a list.... but if you look at the Ducati website for past and present models you'll be able to see if they do or not.

Very helpful, thanks!

...just 'cuz I'm stoopid...does that mean I can just go for the PCIII since my S4R is a 2004?

Lukey,

Your bike needs only a PCM usb and a dyno tune - about $700 total. I used one on my old 04-s4r. If you get a PCM, don't take the cheap route using a laptop and guess concerning a fuel inj. map. Even some of the "caned" maps as well as dyno maps that others post on the PCM site can do damage to your engine. Ass me how I know. A dyno tune for your bike, done by a shop that knows Ducatis is WELL worth the $$$.

I see you already have the exhaust.  The whole Termi kit from DP for your bike was $2800 last time I checked and had cams to be installed too - a wad of cash.

You won't get the full benefit and potential power increase without a larger dia. exhaust system (50mm) and taking off the airbox top. If you are not already familiar, take a look at Brad Blacks posts on the MOTO-ONE web site. He has posted a wealth of info. that we all owe him for.  http://www.moto-one.com.au/performance/

Interested to know how the Nemsis worked out with the S2R1000?  I have just ordered one for an 07 S2R1000 with TPO pod filters and cat removed and Akrapovic exhaust.  Did you get a customer map done? Would you care to share it or be interested in one if (when) I have mine done?

Also the Nemsis system allows for two programs to be loaded.  I was going to set one for performance and one for economy (run as lean as safe for times I am low on gas!).

Would love to hear how it went for you.

I gues it's just not worth it for me to install a power comander or a new ecu for the kind of use I give to my monster... wich I love but its being a pain in the ass to me, I dont know if there is a worst luck monster award... any way a friend of mine is selling a set of leo vince slip ons from a 1000 ie 2003 I think. do you think they will fit a 620 ie 2003 monster without installing a power comander or a power card or ecu at all? I'd doit just for the sound any way

I couldn't be happier with my DP ECU...throttle response/idling/sheer awesomeness have greatly improved!
