Ok, So I just checked valve clearances for the first time and want to make sure that I am on the right track. Just got the bike. The PO knew nothing about bikes and it shows.
99 M750

Horizontal
Intake   Unloaded .004    Loaded .012       Difference=.008
Exhaust Unloaded .005    Loaded .012       Difference=.007

Vertical
Intake   Unloaded .0015   Loaded .007       Difference=.0055
Exhaust Unloaded .0015   Loaded .007       Difference=.0055

Now from what I gather I need to remove the shims and measure.
Looks like I need to file down the Vertical Oeners
Not sure which way to go with the closers. Help?

Mr Earl

Yes, sand (no files!  :o) the openers to give 0.004" clearance, using 400-600 grit wet/dry paper with oil and a flat (like plate glass) surface and a figure-eight motion.

It is generally recommended hereabouts to obtain closer shim clearance of 0.000"-0.001".  Ducati has looser specs, but for butter-smooth running, go for the near-zero clearance.  You'll need to measure, calculate, and buy new closer shims.  You'll need a tool to properly measure the closers.  I recommend emsduc.com for the tool and shims.

Use the search feature, there's bazillions of posts dealing with valve adjustment.

Sand or replace the openers. Replace the closers.

Search and read all of the posts (including my own!) on valve issues and congrats. Once you get to valves, you are in pretty good shape for DIY maintenance on a Duc.

Sounds like you know what you're doing.  I posted this up after doing mine... it may still be helpful.
