Stumbled across this as a result of a customer's '07 S4Rs that had a dead R/R.

Old version part#54040101A on the left, new version part#54040111C on the right.

Whether it's actually *better* or not remains to be seen.
In this case it'll be better, as it'll charge the battery....  :P

Top view, not a lot different, note lack of 'posts' in the fins and closer positioning of wires.

Bottom view, old version no fins, new version has fins.

End view, different fin configuration is a lot more obvious:

Very interesting. Plug-in wiring same as all the 3-phase systems regs? (my 1999 looks like lefty, there).

Speeddog

Yep, plugs are the same, pigtail lengths same.

Bolt hole spacing same, overall size same.

Interesting.  I have the old kind, with the posts, on my '03.  Did the S4R have a lot of miles when it failed?  Or is it operating hours?

Speeddog

Bike has about 8800 miles on it.
Not sure how he uses the bike, whether it's a weekender or a commuter.

Haven't seen many 3-phase regulators fail.

The new model is a Shindengen, I'm pretty sure the old one is as well.

Arent 999/749 3phase regulators prone to failure causing the ECU to shut down during idle due to low voltage? do the 2v and 4v share the same voltage regulator?

brad black

i thought they all had the one on the right.  all the ones that i've seen out here have.  that shindengan is a SH678 or something like that?.  i get them as an aftermarket unit out here.

i had a bad one on a 600m a month or so ago, only ever replaced a few of them.  it was very dead.

This may have been a red herring.

A sample of what I've been able to get my eyes recently:

'97 916 with a 2-phase version of the 'right' style
Custom Monster with a 3-P 'right'
'01 M900 with a 3-P 'right'
'05 S2R800 with a 3-P 'left'
'03 M620 with a 3-P 'left'
'99 Cagiva Gran Canyon with a 3-P 'right'

So the body style seems to be meaningless.
