So doing some spring cleaning for my first trek of the bike season I ran into to issues.  One my batter needed to be charged which I have done and now it starts.  Two after charging the batter I put the tank down and thought I had missed something because it did not go down all the way I applied a little force then took a look and discovered the clip had slipped past the catch.  So I pushed the catch out a little bit with a screwdriver pushed back and attempted to latch tank.  Now it does not even go far enough to reach the latch.  Just wondering if anyone has ran into this.

Thanks,

The catch hook bends fairly easily.
The bottom part is supposed to be even with the bottom of the black plastic surround.

I bent mine back and filled the space between the back of the hook and the ignition switch cylinder base with black silicone RTV.  I hope that will make it somewhat stiffer.

it also might have turned 180 degrees. I had this happen once, and it makes it impossible to latch until you turn it back.

or thats not your issue?

I'm having a little bit of a different issue.  My tank latch catches and hooks, but find that its loose and doesn't snug the tank up enough.  There is no more adjustment in the latch, as its threaded all the way in.

^ Is your tank warped? ^

If you're asking about my tank, I don't believe it is.  Looks fine to my eyes.  Is there a fix for it?

check the rubber mounts on which your tanks sits to the frame.  If they are off, or at least one, you're tank is most likely warped.  This is part of your latch problem, happened to me.

I wonder if you could shim up those rubber feet a bit--just enough to pullit up so it is tight? I would try bending the catch down first though...

Most likely your catch is bent upward.

I see that on about 2/3 of the bikes that come into my shop.

Is the so called "catch" the lip thats just behind the ignition?  By rubber mounts are on the tank.  Keep in mind this is a tank from 2000 so maybe it is warped.  I didn't even know that could happen.  Whats the fix for the latch.  I just want to have the thing snug so it cant shift side to side.

Item #26 is what I'm calling the catch.
The parts catalogue calls it a hook:
